Are you ready to step into the classroom of the future – one where you won’t even have to leave home? Online learning has transformed distance learning, largely helped by advances in broadband technology and software applications. The classroom of the future is therefore anywhere you want it to be, making distance learning that much more interactive and compelling. ntpages caught up with Dr. Sam Jayawardana, Dean of Studies at the Australian Institute of Holistic Medicine (AIHM), for an insight into their ‘virtual lecture’ concept.
What is the difference between a correspondence and online course?
“We distinguish ourselves from that type of distance learning by offering interactivity and participation to our students.”
What was the inspiration for your ‘virtual lecture’ concept?
“The most common problem for students studying via distance methods is that they tend to feel isolated with little interactivity. Technology now allows us to offer a very different experience to our students.”
What equipment do I need to enrol in your online courses?
“Besides a computer with a broadband connection, all you need is a webcam and microphone.”
How are your online courses delivered?
“Students have a dedicated section on our web site where they can log in. They have access to downloadable lecture materials, lecture plans and schedules.
How does your ‘virtual lecture’ concept works in practice.
“Every class and lecture is recorded by webcams, which enables you to join a class in real time. With your microphone you are able to actually interact and ask lecturers questions live. Alternatively there is a chatbox where you can type in a question for the lecturer – much like the functionality of an instant messenger application.”
What happens if I miss a lecture?
“There is an archive of all lectures conducted so you can listen to these as often as you need to during the course of the term.”
Who will this type of study appeal to?
“Online study and the concept of the virtual lecture are attractive to a range of individuals. You may live in a rural area or region where no formal educational institution is available. Others may be juggling work or family commitments and want the opportunity to study when it suits them.”
What range of courses does AIHM offer?
“AIHM offers a range of natural therapies including acupuncture, Ayurveda, herbal medicine, homeopathy, massage, naturopathy and nutritional medicine.”
Will my qualification be recognised?
“Yes, absolutely. All our advanced Diploma and Diploma courses meet national competency standards and are also approved for Government VET FEE HELP assistance.”
