Are you looking for a non-surgical and painless way to brighten up the appearance of your skin? Microdermabrasion may be perfect for you. Often referred to as the "lunch hour facial", microdermabrasion can leave you with fresh, healthy looking skin after just one treatment. Read on to find out more.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive procedure that uses micro-crystals in order to remove the outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells to reveal younger, healthier skin. It also stimulates the production of a new underlying layer of skin cells with higher levels of collagen and elastin, further improving the skin's appearance. It is much gentler than dermabrasion. In fact, after a treatment, it is possible to return to work as the procedure is so brief and the side effects so unnoticeable.

What Microdermabrasion Can Help

Microdermabrasion is non-surgical and virtually painless. It removes the dead and dull surface layers of the skin, stimulating an increase in collagen production and rejuvenation. This treatment can improve:

  • oily or dull skin
  • enlarged pores
  • clogged pores
  • fine lines
  • mild acne scars
  • mild complexion problems such as uneven pigmentation or poor skin texture
  • enhanced circulation and lymph flow
  • some stretch marks

The Microdermabrasion Treatment Process

The treatment session typically lasts for 30 to 60 minutes. The results of the treatment can be seen almost immediately, with just one treatment improving the skin's colour, tone and health. Your skin should look fresh and feel smooth and soft after one treatment. However, microdermabrasion is most effective when the client receives multiple treatments at intervals of two to three weeks.

Microdermabrasion is not painful. The procedure uses aluminium oxide crystals to gently exfoliate the skin, so there should not be any pain or lingering discomfort. However, it does cause a mild warming or tingling sensation that most clients quite enjoy.

Who is not suitable for Microdermabrasion?

While microdermabrasion is a safe procedure, it is not suitable for everyone. Certain skin types and conditions can be negatively affected by the treatment, and for some people, it may even result in scarring. People that suffer from severe rosacea, active acne, eczema, or dermatitis are not good candidates for microdermabrasion. Be aware that the most common side effects of microdermabrasion are increased skin sensitivity and the risk of sunburn. These are usually mild and go away quickly. There are minimal risks to having this treatment performed but problems such as infection can occur if it is incorrectly performed.
