Curious about a career as a beauty therapist? When you work in the beauty field, there are many paths to explore. This article aims to answer all your questions, so you know what to expect when you graduate and finish your beauty therapy course.
What do Beauty Therapists do?
If you’re passionate about beauty, you probably know what therapists do. Manicures, pedicures, facials, massage, waxing, spray tans, exfoliation and body treatments and loads more. There’s so much to learn – chances are, your training covered most of them.
You could choose to provide these treatments at an existing salon, in your own salon or as a mobile beauty therapist. The latter two options give you the opportunity to build your own business and choose how much you charge, what to offer, and who to offer it to.
However, most beauty therapists start out working in existing clinics or salons. That way, you get a feel for running a business, working with clients, marketing, billing and other essential business and technical skills.
How much do Beauty Therapists Earn?
The average starting salary for beauty therapists in Australia is around $35,000 per year. The more senior you are, they more you’ll earn – often up to $50,000 a year or more. Most beauty therapists work 38 hours a week, which puts the full-time salary on par with many other professions.
Becoming a Specialist Beauty Therapist
As well as providing a broad suite of services, you could choose to specialise in one of these areas:
- Beauty consulting: this involves promoting particular products for a cosmetic brand. You’ll need strong sales skills and specialist training.
- Beautician: as a beautician, you specialise in makeup, nails, waxing, eyelash treatments and other beauty (but not body) treatments.
Weddings are another popular avenue for beauty therapists. You could be called upon to devise hair and make-up for the bride and bridal party – and earn more than you would from non-wedding work.
Wherever you choose to take your career as a beauty therapist, you’re sure to never be bored!
