Correspondence or distance learning has long been an option for those wanting to pursue their studies whilst juggling work or family commitments, giving you the option to study in your own time and at your own pace. Whilst this traditionally meant receiving study materials via the post, the online world has introduced a more interactive element to the concept.
The Natural Therapy Pages spoke to Cengage Education, who provide a range of natural therapy based courses as part of their broader curriculum, about the benefits of distance study.
What are the primary benefits of distance education?
"With distance education you can study when and where you want - and at your own pace. Distance education is highly flexible so it’s a great choice for people with work or have family commitments. And with no need to attend classes, it’s perfect for remote students too."
Don’t you need to have a lot discipline to study via distance learning?
"Usually the best results come when students establish good study habits at the outset and are consistent in completing the coursework and delivering assignments. Sometimes students do need help in maintaining the momentum, which is where our mentors come in. They’re expert at providing the right motivation."
Compared to full time education, what is the cost benefit of distance learning?
"With no need to attend lectures or tutorials, students obviously save on travel costs. There are no hidden costs either – course fees cover all learning materials, delivered straight to you. Of course, the flexibility of distance education means students who are working can schedule their studies around their job, so they earn while they learn."
So how many courses do you offer in total?
"We currently offer over 100 higher and vocational education courses, with well in excess of 700,000 students having enrolled since our inception in 1921. These include statements of attainment, certificates, diplomas, degrees as well as enrichment courses."
Are your courses nationally recognised?
"All our degree, diploma and certificate level courses are recognised by employers and industry groups Australia-wide."
And how many of your courses are natural therapy based?
"We have two nationally recognised fitness courses in our Health & Well-being faculty. In addition, we offer courses in Aromatherapy, Exercise Therapy, Feng Shui, Homeopathy, Herbal Medicine, Iridology, Life Coaching, Nutrition, Physical Therapy Aide and Sports Nutrition."
What resources do students have access to while studying?
"Students have access to our vast online library, which contains millions of records and articles and is a valuable adjunct to their course materials. In addition, our experienced tutors are on hand for advice and guidance, and we also have a team of mentors who are great at providing encouragement at crucial times. If students wish to establish connections with fellow students they can do that too, via our online Student Portal. Its forums and lounges make it a virtual campus so it’s a great place to hang out."
How many of your courses have an online component?
"The vast majority of our courses are available via our online Student Portal, which allows materials to be delivered, research conducted and assignments submitted electronically."
What are the primary benefits of this online aspect?
"Essentially it allows students to study any place with internet access, and at any time that suits them. You don’t need to lug textbooks around or wait for the library to open – everything you need is online."
What is the age profile of your students?
"We have students of all ages - our youngest is 18 and our oldest is 69! We have a lot of students who are about to take their first step into the world of work and need a qualification to help them get a foot in the door. Equally, we have a lot of students who are highly experienced workers and are studying with an eye to promotion or running their own business. Anyone can study – it’s a great way to get the skills you need to get ahead."
