The History
The method of healing now called Reiki dates back around 2500 years but was lost for some time. Reiki was rediscovered in the mid- eighteen hundreds by a Japanese man named Mikao Usui.
Usui sought to find and teach ancient spiritual healing methods. H e searched for them in Buddhist teachings that were embedded in Sanskrit texts.
After discovering the methods he then entered a 21 day meditation and fast by a waterfall on Mt Kurama –near Kyoto. On the last day he was shown a way that enabled him to activate the healing energy that he later termed Reiki.
The term Rei-ki means “Universal Life force Energy”.
Hawayo Takata, a Hawaiian Japanese woman brought Reiki to the west.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a hands-on healing modality that uses universal life force energy to heal in a safe and non-intrusive way. The healing energy of Reiki channels to wherever it is needed in your body. It shifts physical and emotional blockages that may have been causing illnesses or emotional upset.
Reiki provides relaxation and relief from anxiety and stress. It energises and realigns the energy channels of the body allowing for increased harmony in the mind, body and spirit and improved balance on all levels of being. It is subtle yet powerful.
Many people gain improvements in energy levels, mood and sleep patterns. Often there is an experience of deep relaxation and a sense of peace and wellbeing. Reiki is often used in conjunction with conventional and complementary medicine.
Reiki practitioners do not provide diagnosis of illness.
The Treatment
Treatments are usually given with the client lying down, although there are also methods for seated and distance healing.
The Reiki practitioner uses light touch with cupped hands to focus the energy to the energy centres of the body or to any point on the body that is experiencing physical pain.
The practitioner acts a channel for this energy and in no way depleted of their own life force energy.
There are a number of positions on the body that a generally used in treatment sessions. These positions are non invasive and if desired there need not be any touch at all.
Treatments vary in length.
