Stress has become a part of modern life, some we can control with lifestyle changes and others we have to learn to deal with. Whilst not all physiological stress reactions are bad, long term or chronic can take its toll on our emotional, mental and physical health. Recent studies have shown that this kind of problematic stress can affect the immune systems response to disease (Prof Esther Sternberg MD).

Associated Problems:

Inability to protect the body from viral infection, prolonged wound healing, arthritic-like joint inflammation, increased risk of cancer cell activation, constant fatigue, poorer cognitive function ie. memory problems, and advanced bodily aging at the cellular level (Dr Elizabeth Blackburn). Yes ladies this means earlier wrinkles, poorer skin quality and grey hair at the very least.

The same research indicates the importance of treating emotional wellbeing as a means of protecting the body and the mind. Good health is not just about treating the body once disease has already launched its assault.

Ancient civilizations believed that worry could cause illness and subsequently created healing places where the sick could go to be surrounded by natural beauty, serenity, safety and most importantly social support. In this space one could express all emotions without recrimination or punishment. This is the basis of modern day counselling.

Unfortunately, even once the stressor is no longer present in our lives our bodies may still wear the damage causing later poor health, depression, anxiety and the repetition of past and now hardwired destructive patterns. An integrative approach provides real tools to reduce this damage as well as utilising research on brain plasticity to change learned patterns.
It’s not indulgent to take care of your SELF, it’s crucial.
