Chinese Medicine has been used to treat children from infant to teenagers for over 2000 years. Many childhood complaints may be relieved with a course of Chinese Medicine including: recurrent respiratory infections, chronic digestion issues, skin allergies, failure to thrive and others.
A child's body and organ systems are immature and still developing, therefore children are more prone to exterior infections and digestive complaints. Chinese Medicine places great emphasis on diet and lifestyle advice when treating children, we believe that if we get the diet right and their digestion is working properly then other issues will also resolve.
Despite their body systems being immature and prone to infections, children tend to recover very quickly also. Therefore it is imperative to seek treatment at the onset of an illness and not wait until it becomes chronic.
Children's Treatments
Paediatric Tuina (Massage) is an important treatment modality in Chinese Medicine Paediatrics. In the consultation parent's will be taught a massage routine to take home and treat their child, typically the routine should be performed once a day or once every two days.
Acupuncture may also be used on children, however the needling technique is gentler and the retention of needles is much shorter.
Herbs are also an important part of the treatment process. The dosage of herbs will be lower and if required it may be sweetened with honey to help ingestion. If the child is an infant and still breast feeding, the herbs may be given to the mother and passed to the child via breast milk.
Cupping and Moxibustion depending on the condition being treated cupping and moxibustion may also be used.
