About your Registered Calmbirth Educator
My name is Kate Corbett I am a midwife, Calmbirth® Educator and mother of 3 beautiful young children. I have always had a special interest in working with families since I began my nursing career in 2004 at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. I undertook my Graduate Diploma in Midwifery in 2007 out of a desire to focus more on the promotion of health and wellbeing. As a midwife I have worked with women and their partners providing care in pregnancy, during labour and birth and postnatally including at home. During my midwifery career I became interested in the Calmbirth® teachings as I observed how calmly, confidently and fearlessly couples approached their baby’s birth when they had prepared with Calmbirth®. My motivation to become a Calmbirth® Educator grew stronger after the extremely positive and joyful birth of my son, which I prepared for with Calmbirth®.
What is Calmbirth®?
Calmbirth® is a prenatal childbirth education course developed by midwife Peter Jackson as a means to assist women and their partners to experience the wonder and joy of childbirth free from fear and anxiety. The Calmbirth® philosophy is based on the premise that pregnancy, labour and birth are normal life events that can be enjoyed. In the courses, couples are taught highly effective techniques to work with their body during labour.
Calmbirth® emphasises the important role of the partner or support person in assisting the mother throughout pregnancy, labour and birth to remain calm, confident and focused. Throughout the classes the many ways partners can be actively involved in supporting the birthing mother are explored.
Calmbirth® Course Overview
The classes involve a combination of theory and practical skills and covers:
- The powerful link between your mind and body and how this affects your labour and birth.
- How the muscles of your uterus work during labour
- How you can use your own inner resources of Relaxation, Visualisation and Breathing to best work with your body in labour.
- The important role of partner or birthing companion.
- The process of labour and birth.
- The important relationship that you develop with your baby in pregnancy and how this influences their brain development and ultimately their life.
