Education & training
I love sharing the wisdom of the tarot with others. In my own life I consult the cards and heed their messages. The picture they paint is not always the one I want to see, but I know it's the one I need to see! I believe the tarot::
opens doors to new possibilities and new ways of seeing old issues
reveals the power you have to manifest your goals and dreams
channels energy from the divine.
My story
I've been reading tarot cards since the early 1990s. What started as a pastime quickly turned into a passion. I looked around for other enthusiasts and found them in the Tarot Guild of Australia. I joined the Guild and ended up on the national committee for eight years - four of them as President.
Outside the tarotsphere, I've worked as a consultant and writer in the field of education and training . In 2005 I turned my hand to writing about my twin passions of tarot and travel, and Ticket, Passport and Tarot Cards was published in late 2005.
Before the manuscript was even finished, I was onto the next stage of the journey - a series of 22 vignettes for community television - one segment for each of the 22 Major Arcana cards. The series won an award for the best personal or spiritual development program on Australian community television in 2006.
In 2011 I launched Global Spiritual Studies, an online hub for learning experiences and products to nourish, inspire and guide you along your spiritual path. The quality of presenters and teachers is astounding. With this venture I know I have reached the place where I'm meant to be, for my light comes from providing channels through which others can see and share their light.
Do join me for a reading, for study or pack your bags and come on a spiritual adventure tour!
Tarot classes
I offer the following courses through Global Spiritual Studies:
- The Major Arcana and More!
- The Minor Arcana and More!
Some knowledge of the tarot is an advantage but not essential. The course on the Major Arcana should be done first as these cards are central to an understanding of the tarot.
Tarot reading practice
I also offer monthly tarot reading practice sessions. Participants send me one or two layouts in advance. I compile these into a single file which is sent to all participants on the day of the session. At the scheduled time, I bring everyone together in a teleconference – this can be through a landline telephone number anywhere in the world or through your Skype name if you have one.
Tarot readings
The tarot is a set of 78 cards which originated in the 15th century in Italy where they were used to play a game called Tarocchi. Today, however, the cards are best known as a divination tool, as a way of helping people see where their lives are heading. I’m always struck by how the cards people choose reflect whatever’s on their minds. There are 78 cards in the deck, so, in theory, they could pick totally irrelevant cards, but they never do.
How does tarot work?
The images on the cards you select in a tarot reading bring the unconscious into the conscious. Your higher self already knows where you’re heading, but you can’t always see it. Consulting the tarot is a way of bringing the two planes of consciousness together to help you make decisions that are in your best interests.
Do the cards predict the future?
I prefer to say they provide signposts to the future, based on what’s in your life right now. But never forget that you have freewill - it’s up to you whether you follow the directions on the signposts or not. The cards can also shed light on the past, can help you come to terms with past issues, help you understand why something did or didn’t work out as you had hoped.
Can I read the cards for myself?
The answer is definitely “yes”, but you absolutely must resist the temptation of laying the cards until you get the ones you want. You have to go with the cards you first select, because they reflect what you need to know about a situation - which may not, of course, equate with how you want the situation to be!
The tarot journey
The symbols in the tarot cards tell a universal story. As you journey from the Fool to the World in the Major Arcana, from Ace to Ten in the Minor Arcana and from Page to King in the court cards, you become aware of different stages in the development of an issue or situation. If you draw Nines and Tens in the Minor Arcana, the general message is that you are nearing the end of something. If you draw Aces and Twos, you are at the beginning of something. If you draw Pages, your attitude or approach at the moment may be immature or unrealistic; you possibly lack the maturity and self-awareness of the Queens and Kings.
Which tarot deck should I use?
There's no right or wrong deck - simply use a deck (or decks) you feel comfortable with. Personally, I use the Rider-Waite-Smith deck or ones that are based on it. If you want to browse hundreds of decks, visit the wonderful Aeclectic Tarot website.
