What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote its own natural healing ability. It is not a mystical theory of ancient Chinese, but a type of bioenergetics medicine which has been practiced and developed in Chinese medicine for more than 5000 years. Over this vast length of time, billions of people have been treated successfully.
Chi (pronounced “chee”) is an energy referred to as the ‘life force’ or ‘vital force’ which is present in all living creatures. Chi circulates through 14 major meridians, or energy channels, to all parts of the body. If the flow of Chi is impeded for any reason – by blockage, imbalance, or misdirection – the body’s health weakens in response to the shortage of vital energy.
By restoring the flow of Chi energy, the body can repair itself. To do this, the doctor will stimulate specific points along the meridians, called acupoints, with hair-fine acupuncture needles. This stimulation helps re-balance and encourage the stronger flow of Chi, which is necessary for the body to repair itself and also for the body to maintain itself.
About the Needles
Acupuncture needles are not like the hypodermic needles that are used to give shots and injections. Acupuncture needles are very slender and flexible, as fine as a hair or fine fiber thread, and they do not force liquid into the skin. Some people may experience a little tingling, but new patients usually are surprised at how comfortable, pleasant, and relaxing acupuncture treatment is. Acupuncture needles are sterile disposable needles that are shipped in individually sealed packages and are used only once.
Treatment Choices without Needles
Acupoints can be stimulated by many means other than needles. Some of the other options are, acupressure (where finger or mechanical pressure is applied on the acupoint), laser stimulation, heat or cold stimulation.
Chiropractic and acupuncture what a wonderful combination together
Johann started to see the benefit of it and went back to university and completed his master’s degree in acupuncture. Chiropractic works with the skeletal and nervous system. Skeletal problems are often the origan of many physical complaints. Johann experienced an adjustment alone may not hold if uneven muscle tension or soft tissue inflammation are constantly tugging the bones out of alignment. Acupuncture works with soft tissue and overall balance of body function. By relieving pain while relaxing and balancing muscle and nervous function, acupuncture helps chiropractic adjustments to last longer. Together, these therapies can shorten the overall time required to resolve a musculoskeletal complaint and therefore get so much better and quicker results.

Lucia Bekker
Acupuncturist
Masters degree Acupuncture
Reg. Nurse, Midwife, Psychiatry
I started my health care career as a Nurse over 30 years ago and have enjoyed every moment of it, and as a health carer. I specifically enjoy working with the elderly and learning more about Dementia and Alzheimer’s and how to care for persons with these illnesses.
Over the past 15 years, I have expanded my knowledge to enable me to help the injured and sick by attending conferences, courses and undertaking studies in Natural medicines including Acupuncture.
I was first introduced to Acupuncture by my husband, Johann, who treated my severe knee pain through the use of Acupuncture. Unbelievable at that point of time, I was immediately convinced that Acupuncture has a healing ability and has since then worked for me in various ways over the preceding 10 years.
In 2002, I made the move to Australia with my husband and daughters and I decided to personally explore and study the versatility of Acupuncture. Since 2006 I have been practicing the use of Acupuncture in our Clinic in Tannum Sands, with fantastic results for persons of all ages, illnesses and discomforts.
Lucia enjoys working with: Feet and Ankle pain (foot joint mobilisation), Facial paralyses/pain (neuralgia), Stress and Hormonal issues, Pre-and Post Natal (pregnancy) care, Infertility support and even Cosmetic facial acupuncture. Also doing Therapeutic Massages and Pregnancy Massages.
