Prana Chit Foods
A range of pre-packed foods prepared by Dr Ajit (BAMS)
These days, all of us are living hectic and busy lives, juggling our commitments between work, leisure and family. With so many demands on our time, none of us can afford to get sick so we constantly search for various ways to keep our families and ourselves fit and healthy. While we all approach this challenge in different way, something we all agree on is the need to make healthy choices in the foods we eat.
Whenever the question of healthy food comes up, everyone thinks about specific amounts of protein, carbohydrates and fats in their diet. Some will consider eating only organic foods while others might choose to eat only raw salads as a healthy alternative. However, in spite of all these efforts, people still suffer from various digestive problems such as constipation, indigestion, hyper-acidity and IBS which, if not treated, can lead to more serious health problems.
In Ayurveda, the ancient health science of India, the focus of a healthy diet is not just considering what we eat but also looking at how the food is metabolised in one’s digestive system and whether the food selected by an individual is compatible with them or not.
With these principles in mind I have developed a range of pre-packed meals under the “Prana Foods”. Prana means “life force” and everything in nature is imbued with this Prana, including the food we eat.
These meals are quick to prepare, easy to digest and nourish both the body and mind. They include:
- Kitchari: Kitchari is a traditional recipe used in Ayurveda as a simple but regular de-tox andsupporting those suffering from digestive problems such as IBS, Chron’s or colitis. It is one of the most nourishing and easily digestible foods available and acts to de-toxify and rejuvenate our bodies.
- Besan Porridge: Besan (or Kala Channa) is a variant of the chickpea but is dark brown in colour and smaller in size. It is high in protein but has a low glycaemic index so is a good protein option for people with Diabetes or those who want to burn fat. It makes a nourishing porridge, particularly for those looking for a gluten free option for breakfast. Best during Winter.
- Semolina Porridge: Semolina has been known for centuries as a nourishing food for everyone but especially for those with digestive issues. In Ayurveda it is also recognised as the first food for babies. Its key strength is its ability to make us feel full quickly and for longer, preventing over eating and snacking between meals. An ideal family breakfast that no one can resist which will leave everyone feeling nourished and wanting seconds.
- Besan Pancakes: Besan is made from a legume known as Black Gram (or kala channa). This legume is rich in iron and is well known for its action to assist in fat metabolism, as well as strengthening muscles and bones which is why it has been used for centuries to support diabetic patients. Besan Pancakes are the best food for those who have a gluten allergy or looking for a protein rich meal either for breakfast or lunch option.
