Cupping
Cupping is one of the modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Cups are adhered to certain places along the body’s meridians using suction – we use glass cups. Cupping mobilises the flow of blood and circulation to serve as a catalyst for the healing of a wide range of conditions.
Cupping can be used as a complement to other traditional treatments to assist and expedite positive outcomes of the treatment.
A flammable substance - alcohol for instance is placed in a cup and then lit. As the fire subsides, the cup is placed upside down on the body. As the air inside the cup cools a vacuum is created, causing the skin to rise and redden as the blood vessels expand. The cup will usually be left on the skin for five to 10 minutes and if any discolouring of the skin occurs, it usually returns to normal within 10 days.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion involves the burning of the herb Mugwort to facilitate healing. The goal of moxibustion is to increase and stimulate the flow of energy throughout the body to enhance general health.
Moxibustion can be used to treat:
- Colds
- Yang deficiency and dampness in the body
- Can assist in turning breech babies
Surrey Hills Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Clinic uses indirect moxibustion, which has a low risk of pain or burning. Our practitioner lights one end of a moxa stick, and holds it close to the local area being treated until the area turns red. We may also use Acupuncture needles in tandem with the moxa.
