SPtherapy - Oncology Massage
Focus areas
Research has shown that Oncology Massage reduces the side effects associated with conventional cancer treatments – chemotherapy and radiotherapy – as well as the symptoms of the diseas. The results showed the following:
- Pain improved 47%
- Fatigue improved 42%
- Anxiety improved 59%
- Nausea improved 51%
- Depression improved 48%
- Other (shortness of breath, memory problems or disturbed sleep) 48%
Oncology Massage is gentle and non-invasive and is safe at almost every stage in the cancer journey (your massage therapist can provide a treatment while you’re receiving your chemotherapy!). There are however some contraindications that indicate that the therapist’s approach may need to be further modified (a shorter session time for example):
- neturopenia (low white cell count - susceptible to infection)
- thrombocytopenia (low red cell count - may bruise easily)
- current or very recent radiotherapy (affected area would be avoided until healed)
- current infection
- recent surgery
OM therapists have been specially trained to work safely with ports, catheters, stoma's and wounds so that you can be sure your Massage is comfortable and relaxing. You will also be provided with extra padding, pillows, adjustable massage table and back heights to assist with this.
