Sophrology has been widely practised in French-speaking Europe since the 1960s and is now making its way into the English-speaking world. A unique blend of traditional meditation and modern psychology, the practice connects mind and body to nurture presence and connectedness whilst implementing proven psychology techniques like NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) to engender habits of positive thinking.
Presented in short courses, either 1:1 or in small groups, Sophrology is taught in 90-minute sessions with participants receiving notes and a recording of the 20-minute exercise to practise throughout the week.
beChill Exams is a course specifically designed to help young adults with general life skills and preparation for exams or other potentially stressful events. Trends show increased levels of anxiety, depression, self-doubt and self-harm in today’s adolescents. Students are sleeping less, they are surrounded by digitally-based and other addictive products and are experiencing identity and acceptance issues. Student performance and resilience is directly related to their wellbeing and mental health – this is where Sophrology can help. Sessions are run in course format within participating schools or as 1:1 individually-designed sessions to address specific needs on request.
Much of what we do in life is ‘on automatic’. We think and act instinctively, based on habits and previous experiences. Sometimes this is helpful for our happiness and sometimes it’s not. By connecting the mind and the body, we become more grounded, more focussed and more present. Our self-awareness grows and we are able to see ourselves, others and life itself with more clarity.
Sophrology exercises nurture the practice of non-judgement so that with time, we become more accepting of ourselves and others and less reactive in situations of potential conflict - things simply don’t bother us the way they used to.
By regularly ‘watering’ happy experiences and memories and ‘adjusting the focus’ on negative ones, we find ourselves more content and grateful for the positive and enjoyable aspects of our life. In touch with our strengths and capacities, we feel empowered to make decisions based on what we instinctively know is good for us.
