There is a significant difference to our vigilant mind in expressed words such as “Happy” or “Unhappy”, “Hate or Love”.

Some people believe that life that is made of big things exists more fully than in what is commonly thought of as small. In fact, often the opposite is true. Small steps in the right direction tend to lead to big and preferred results.

At Solution Focused Counselling we are aware of these mechanisms and therefore we employ therapies that tend to be hopeful and solution oriented to promote transience of clients’ problems.

Solution Focused Counselling embraces variety of professional counselling approaches depending on clients’ needs. However, among the strongest are: Solution Focused Brief Therapy that favours solution to clients’ problems and Person Centered Therapy that promotes the power of each client’s individuality.

About Us

Mirek Kanik is a Counsellor and Psychotherapist who graduated from the University of Notre Dame Australia with a Bachelor of Counselling followed by a Master's degree in Counselling.

Mirek is known as an Experienced and empathic Counsellor / Psychotherapist / Trauma Specialist with extensive practical knowledge in providing therapeutic and solution focused interventions and comprehensive case management for individuals with dual diagnosis and a broad range of issues including torture and trauma, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) clients, and people with prolonged drug and alcohol and other addictions issues.

Mirek has a proven track record in demonstrated psychotherapeutic counselling abilities; possessing a thorough and comprehensively broad ranging understanding of mental health issues, and a complete knowledge of contemporary intervention strategies and modalities including risk / harm assessments and crisis interventions.

Mirek is accustomed working independently as well as in multidisciplinary Allied Health Interactive Team Work as he developed an approach in the delivery of advanced professional services that compliment working with doctors, mental health nurses, occpational therapist, physiotherapists and many others.

Mirek provides a full range of support services for issues surrounding: trauma related anxiety and depression (including panic attacks); drug, alcohol and gambling addictions; phobias; relationship difficulties (individuals, couples and families); eating and sexual disorders; and stress management.

Professional Development

Mirek is concious about the value of continous professional development. Therefore he says: "As part of my continuous aspiration for improvement of my skills and career growth, I participate in regular seminars and conferences in Australia and Overseas. Consequently, it exposes me to the current trends in counselling and psychology and enables me progressive learning from the world most advanced therapists.

My personal collaboration with the world renowned clinicians such as Dr Scott Miller from Chicago and Professor Gerald Corey from California, led me to developing interest in efficacy of new clinical trends, and encouraged me to testing new methods in therapeutic approaches. My close contact with Professor Corey, who is an outstanding author of over sixty books on counselling that are used as text books in universities all over the world, has been and continues to be, a significant influence on my professional development".

Mirek is a full clinical member of Australian Counselling Association (ACA) that promotes him as a professional therapist that is listed on the National Registry of Professional Counsellors and Psychotherapsts in Australia. The membership of American Psychology Association (APA) that is the world top regulating body in Psychology and Mirek's membership of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) enable him to keep up with the world newest trends and therefore promote Mirek's continuous Professional Development, further.

Mirek's own area of research revolves around finding new methods in counselling approach that produce better outcomes. Mirek's research thesis posed a question around phenomenon of Spirituality and Mysticism in Counselling: "What is the relevance of Mysticism in Modern Counselling and how is it experienced by Practicing Counsellors?" Following the obtained data, this research revealed a strong connection between Science and Paranormal in the counselling context.

Mirek's other interests include playing guitar and photography: Mirek is a blues guitarist and and accomplished portrait photoragrapher.

Mirek has been married to his school sweetheart for the past 30 years. They have two, now adult children. Mirek and his wife currently reside in Perth Western Australia.
