Painful Periods –What Chinese Medicine Can Do For You
Cramping, back pain, nausea, vomiting, fainting, tiredness, irritable, feeling hot or feeling cold, a dragging down sensation, bloating and many more signs & symptoms. Does this sound familiar? Month after month, many women throughout Australia ~ as many as 50%, experience painful periods.
Pain killers* and the oral contraceptive pill will certainly help you with period pain but painkillers only mask the pain for a few short hours and the pill is a bandaid solution to a problem that is still there. The IUD Mirena also prescribed for painful periods but, like the pill, masks the condition for what is really causing it and never fixes it.
An effective, long term treatment, such as Chinese herbal medicine has the ability to get to the source of the problem of why pain is occurring. The theory of Chinese medicine and its ability to combat pain, notably period pain, has been used for centuries with fantastic results.
Regular Chinese herbs used for menstrual pain:
- Dong Gui
From the ginseng family, Dang Gui can regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve period pain. A perfect herb to bring back a period after stopping the pill and will indeed help with pre-menstrual symptoms - Chuan Xiong
Allows energy (what we call ‘Qi’) to flow freely and improve blood circulation to treat pain - Bai Shao
Used for a wide variety of women’s health problems. It nourishes the blood and improves circulation to augment and strengthen the liver and stop pain - Yi Mu Cao
If you get blood clots in your period, then this herb is for you. It is great for improving blood flow throughout the reproductive system - Yan Hu Suo
The perfect pain reliever, distantly related to the opium poppy and stronger than Panadol. This herb strengthens the circulation of Qi & blood
As an herbalist, I use combinations of herbs to produce a formula compatible for your own particular problem. The 5 herbs above are just a few of the amazing medicinal used to combat this problem and provide a pain free monthly cycle. Even if you don’t experience period pain, I am sure you know someone who does. Pass this information on and you could make at least 1 female very happy!
*Painkillers are known as NSAIDs = non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Common names include: Aspirin, Celebrex, Ibuprofen (Advil, Herron Blue, Nurofen), Mobic, Naprosyn, Tylenol, Voltaren.
WHAT IS CHINESE MEDICINE?
Chinese Medicine is based on an energy system within the human body. The focus is on bringing together the mind, body and spirit in harmony with nature. By promoting health in this way, I have the ability to alleviate pain and suffering as well as concentrating on physical, psychological, emotional or spiritual wellbeing.
You might know Chinese medicine to be more commonly referred to as Acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine.
In addition there are also other therapeutic aids used in Chinese medicine such as:
- Cupping
- Gua Sha (or spooning)
- Moxibustion
- Dietary Therapy
- Lifestyle Support
WHAT CAN CHINESE MEDICINE TREAT?
Chinese Medicine is effective in the treatment of a wide range of common and not so common health conditions. It has its own unique method for describing disease and is able to treat conditions that Western medicine is sometimes unable to explain, such as strange pains in the stomach or an odd twinge in the leg. It assists with general health maintenance and disease prevention.
The list of problems treatable is infinite but common conditions such as:
are very much treatable.
AND REALLY, DOES IT HURT?
Of course not! No pain, no gain is an old adage that doesn’t ring true for Chinese Medicine. Your body gets the most benefit from relaxing during a treatment and if it hurt, what would be the point? It is very normal to feel some slight sensations and more often than not, people don’t feel anything at all. The needles I use are extremely fine. They are also sterile and disposed of after one use.
Acupuncture and Chinse Herbal Medicine are amazing techniques that you should try if you are suffering from any acute or chronic disease. Acupuncture is not for everyone, but it just might be what you need to get you back to a normal kind of living. Give it a try!
