Are you looking for a fully qualified physiotherapist who will take the time to understand your symptoms and their underlying causes in order to provide you with the best treatment possible?
You've come to the right place. North Sydney Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre in North Sydney, New South Wales, will take a thorough history of your case and perform the necessary diagnostic tests to determine which parts of your spine and other structures are likely to be the source of your pain and loss of function.
Adrian De Vrij, our principal physiotherapist, has the special training and extensive experience required to safely and effectively treat your spine so that stress on the discs and related areas is reduced, pain is relieved, and the damaged or displaced structure can heal. This will allow your body to function normally once again.
How can physiotherapy help you?
Our primary goal is to reduce pain and sequelae by educating you about your condition. To determine movement dysfunction, we perform a thorough assessment, which includes looking at movement patterns, muscle length and strength, and the quality of muscle activation. Soft tissue palpation is used to figure out the exact nature of any muscle tightness.
Additional diagnostic procedures employed are joint function evaluation, which includes measuring joint range of motion with an "inclinometer and protractor" and documenting the results on a body diagram.
Our secondary goals are:
- To restore muscular flexibility, strength, balance and control (i.e. proprioception)
- To improve wellbeing using gentle mobilisation and manual therapy (e.g., hold/relax stretches), muscle energy techniques and manipulation techniques
- To quickly reduce swelling (oedema) and inflammation in affected areas using electro-medical modalities.
Our treatment modalities
We may prescribe a combination of different treatment approaches based on the results of your diagnostic tests in order to provide greater and faster relief. Manual therapy, which includes massage, mobilisation, positional release and spinal manipulation, is one of these methods. The last is only done after muscular balance has been restored and with minimal pressure.
A pre-manipulative test for the upper cervical spine known as the V.B.I test is absolutely necessary to avoid a cerebro-vascular accident (C.V.A.). According to research, it helps to alleviate any concerns about unintended consequences.
Another technique we use to relieve joint pain and increase range of motion is manipulation. It is a single high velocity, low amplitude movement applied passively to the joint as it approaches the end of its available range.
Multimodal treatment refers to the simultaneous use of several different treatment modalities that produce profound long-term results.
The passive application of repetitive, rhythmical, low velocity, small amplitude movements to the joint within or at the limit of its available range is referred to as passive joint mobilisation.
Electro-therapeutic modalities, such as ultrasound, interferential therapy and electromagnetic resonance, are effective in the treatment of pain, inflammation, swelling and tenderness.
Here is a complete list of the modalities that we use:
- Osteopathic and Nordic (Swedish)
- Manual therapy
- Sports and spinal physiotherapy
- Manipulation and mobilisation
- Mulligan Techniques (NZ) (i.e. mobilisation with movement)
- Exercise rehabilitation
- Postural correction
- Electrotherapy and ultrasound (computerised)
- Sports taping
- Soft tissue techniques, including deep tissue massage
- Cervical and lumbar spinal traction (computerised)
A one-hour (intensive) physiotherapy session should be rapidly beneficial and should not cause discomfort, with the exception of possibly delayed onset muscle fatigue following some exercises. It can be relieved by remedial massage.
