What Is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a complementary, rather than alternative health choice, in which practitioners use hands on treatment to identify the cause of pain or injury. A safe and effective course of action is then implemented to resolve or manage the problem so that our clients can get on with leading an active, healthy life.
Osteopaths are highly trained health professionals who must undertake a 5-year Masters degree to gain registration in Australia, so you can rest assured that your health and well being is in very good hands.
Most people, regardless of age or gender will experience some type of back or neck pain, headaches, stiffness, sports injury, tension in the muscles, poor circulation or other pain at some time in their lives. That’s where our trained osteopaths come in, to help relief or manage this pain. Our treatment is safe and effective for all ages.
Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine, which recognises the important link between the structure of the body and the way it functions. Osteopaths focus on how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a holistic unit. Using skilled evaluation, diagnosis and a wide range of hands on techniques, osteopaths can identify important types of dysfunction in your body. Osteopathic treatment uses techniques such as stretching and massage for general treatment of the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) along with mobilisation of specific joints and soft tissues.
What Is The Difference Between Osteopathy, Physiotherapy and Chiropractic?
Most people are slightly confused by the differences between these treatments, so let us explain.
Osteopathy is a holistic manual therapy, which uses detailed anatomical, physical and clinical knowledge. After a thorough physical examination to diagnose the cause of pain taking into account the client’s lifestyle, a detailed case history is created to help manage or resolve the problem.
Osteopaths do not just treat a specific injury but rather consider the body as a whole suffering from a particular injury which must be treated in a holistic manner to achieve optimum balance and health. Osteopaths analyse the underlying causes of the pain or injury and through gentle work on muscles, ligaments, soft tissue, as well as visceral structures when required, aim to address the problem rather than simply provide symptomatic relief.
Physiotherapy is the most common form of ‘manual therapy’ in Australia as physiotherapists work in both the public and private health systems in a variety of areas including: cardio-respiratory, neurology, orthopaedics, paediatric, sports, seniors’ and women’s health.
Physios use a range of drug-free techniques including machines to relieve pain and restore movement. They often prescribe exercises that patients do at home. In a generalised sense, treatment is more often specific rather than holistic as in osteopathy.
Chiropractic is actually quite similar to osteopathy even in its origins. However, many chiropractors treat the injury or pain only by manipulating the vertebrae to normalise spinal position and also the underlying nerve roots. The aim is to restore the functioning of the nervous system usually through a series of chiropractic adjustments returning the body to good health.
Chiropractors often use x-rays to aid diagnosis and treatment is usually through a set number of adjustments
Chiropractors also emphasise the benefits of good nutrition, exercise, wellness and healthy lifestyle options.
