Our community music groups are aimed at improving well-being through enjoyable recreational music-making. We are offering the following programs:
Key-Word Sign Choir
Learn and perform the key-words of song lyrics using signs from the Key-Word Sign and Auslan vocabularies. It’s fun to learn, beautiful to watch and no previous signing or singing skills are required.
Key Word Sign (formally Makaton) is a simplified form of signing using a small vocabulary of signs which provide visual cues to support and enhance the communication of basic concepts and language development in children and adults with communication difficulties.
SUPPORTED MUSIC LESSONS
Have you always wanted to learn a musical instrument?
At Nordoff Robbins we have many years of experience of enabling people living with disability to access music-making. Our supported music lessons program is suitable for people living with a disability or illness as well as those with other challenges such as emotional or behavioural disorders.
It’s suitable for those who don’t need a high level of support - all that is required is an ability to learn. These lessons are subject to availability.
MUSIC CLUB FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
A fun and energetic way to meet new people! Open to all ages and abilities.
The human response to rhythm is a deeply engrained behaviour that is immediately engaging. Drumming brings people together, in an energetically inspiring, fun way. These groups are run at our Centre and provide a creative outlet, release tension and offer a fun way to relax.
Using African Djembes and other hand drums, participants don’t require any musical experience or training.
Some benefits include:
- having an opportunity to be creative
- discovering new talents and skills
- releasing tension
- celebrating and having fun together.
MUSIC CLUB FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Music club is about supporting young people (18-30) with a disability who want to make friends and make music in a group.
The group started after a small group of school friends decided they wanted to get together after leaving school. They all loved music and so they started attending our Music Therapy Centre every week and Music Club was born!
The group has grown and sessions are held at Kingswood every Wednesday at 5pm – it’s a great chance to sing, drum, play instruments and let your hair down in a fun, friendly, supported environment.
MUMS & BUBS GROUP
Our Mums and Bubs programs consist of interactive activities using live music to promote early childhood development and social skills.
Activities incorporate a variety of musical experiences such as singing, drumming, playing instruments and movement to promote such aspects as development of gross and fine motor skills, spatial awareness, co-ordination, sensory integration, development of cognitive, social and problem solving skills, speech and language skills, fostering emotional intelligence and building independence and resilience.
These interactive sessions also assist with developing children’s attention spans, decision making skills, emotional and behaviour regulation, improving the degree of mother-infant attachment and bonding and importantly, creating a supported space for sharing and networking between mums.
We are always interested in expanding our groups - please contact us to register your interest and share your ideas or visit our website: noro.org.au
