What is Ego State Therapy?
Ego State Therapy believes that the Wholeness of who we are is made up of a number of different parts, or Ego States. Some of these parts get along with each other, and some don't.
For example, when I say: "I hate myself when I get so angry", I am describing one part of me that wants to relate peaceably and another part that feels either that it's right to be angry, or it's unable to let go of the anger. Or there might be a part that loves eating chocolate, while another Ego State looks on helplessly, wishing it had more power to eat the healthy diet it craves.
These states emerge naturally from neural pathways formed either over time by repetition of an emotional experience, or they are formed instantaneously through trauma. With assistance from the therapist and the brain's natural plasticity, these pathways can be changed, and new pathways formed. Ego States that previously were problematic can be healed and helped to work cooperatively and positively.
One of the real joys of working with Ego State Therapy is discovering the rich tapestry of the astonishingly different, usually unexpected, and often profound parts that make up the Whole of who we are.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the complexity of the issue. Stopping smoking requires a minimum of three sessions. Some issues will be resolved in one session, while others will take longer.
