MASSAGE THERAPY

You’re in safe hands with our highly qualified therapists treating a wide variety of conditions such as sciatica, back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, muscle tension and postural discomfort, as well as supporting rehabilitation, weight management and detoxification.

What Is Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy has both relaxing and therapeutic benefits. It involves the manipulation of muscles and other soft tissues. It is beneficial in treating a wide range of conditions, which include muscle spasms, strain and pain, work related tension and headaches.

How Does Massage Work?
Massage involves the manipulation of muscles and other soft tissues to relieve pain, promote relaxation, boost circulation and improve emotional and physical health. Our massage therapies include remedial and sports massage, myofascial release, pregnancy massage, deep tissue and trigger point therapy.

TYPES OF MASSAGE AVAILABLE

Remedial Massage

If your muscles are tense, knotted or damaged, remedial massage can be used to free contracted muscles, aid healing and enhance muscle function. Using deep or shallow pressure, remedial massage relaxes the muscle tissue, stimulates the blood supply and calms the nervous system. Oil may be used, as well as stretches or positional release to enhance results.

Remedial massage is perfect for pain caused by poor posture, stress-related tension, muscle strains, sports injuries and general tightness.

Sports Massage

Sport massage isn’t just for athletes. It can be used to treat acute and chronic sprains, strains, trauma and pain caused by any physical activity. Some injuries may result from strenuous exercise; others may be caused by simple activities like walking or swimming.

Sports massage is not intended to be relaxing and can be quite vigorous. It can be carried out before, during or after physical activity to improve performance, increase endurance, avoid injury and recover from damage to muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Myofascial Release

Inside your body are connective tissues called fascia that surround muscles, nerves and blood vessels. These fascia bind structures together and help others to slide easily over each other.

Myofascial release is a soft tissue therapy whereby myofascial tissues are stretched, mobilised, pressed or put under traction to relax contracted muscles, increase circulation and aid lymphatic drainage. Myofascial release can be slower and gentler than other therapies, but is a very powerful treatment and produces excellent results.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger points are small contraction knots in the muscle that may cause pain, spasms or referred pain elsewhere in the body. Some trigger points are only painful when pressure is applied – these are called latent trigger points. Trigger points can be caused by muscle overload, stress, injury and poor posture.

Trigger point therapy consists of firm pressure and manipulation of trigger points to isolate and soften the knotted muscle tissue. Sometimes clusters of trigger points may be found, particularly in the gluteal muscles, and secondary trigger points may also exist.

Pregnancy Massage

Physical discomfort during pregnancy can be caused by weight gain and shifts in the body’s centre of gravity. To ease pregnancy aches and pains, treatment by a practitioner qualified in Pregnancy Massage can provide much-needed relief.

It is important to take extra care during the first trimester, but pregnancy massage is beneficial during the whole of pregnancy. Various positions can be used to ensure comfort and safety, such as lying on the side, being seated or lying face down on a special table.

As well as aiding emotional relaxation, pregnancy massage improves circulation and can be used to ease tension before, after and even during the birthing process.

Relaxation Massage

This kind of massage is deeply relaxing and effective in relieving emotional and physical stress. Relaxation massage (often called ‘Swedish massage’) involves alternating light and firm pressure on the muscle tissues, with long strokes, kneading, vibrating and tapping techniques.

Benefits include: Increased oxygen flow through the blood
  • Improved circulation
  • Decreased muscle tension
  • Better flexibility and soothing of the nervous system
  • If you’re stressed from pressures at work, there’s no better way to unwind!

    TESTIMONIAL

“I have been having remedial and sports massages with Jo for the last three years – she has helped me return to competition form after a horse fell on me in late 2009 leaving fairly extensive upper body injuries. Jo has worked with me to facilitate the ongoing management and improvement of these injuries with an effective, professional and approachable massage programme….”
