What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of medicine founded by the German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, in the late 18th century. Hahnemann was very disturbed by the norms of medical practice during his time, which advocated methods such as blood-letting and the administration of large doses of often toxic substances. He was a staunch believer that treatments had to be gentle, rapid and permanent.

The basic principle of homeopathy can trace its origin to the works of Hippocrates as early as 460 BC. However, it is Hahnemann’s relentless perseverance that gave homeopathy a systematic approach.

How Homeopathy Works

Homeopathy is based on the concept of similars. To illustrate this, think of what you experience while chopping onions. Your eyes will water, your nose will run and you will also feel a burning and smarting sensation. These descriptions beautifully capture what we feel when down with a common cold. Thus, one of the homeopathic remedies for a common cold is Allieum Cepa, which is made from an onion!

Homeopathic remedies are made from plants, animals, minerals and organic substances. However, the actual substance is not present in the remedy. Homeopathic remedies only contain the “medicinal energy” of the original substance. It is this energy that has the therapeutic power.
