Narrative Therapy Connections - About
Focus areas
Our way of working honors people's awareness of their own lives, their ways of meeting problems, and their aspirations for themselves, their family and their future.
It is called 'narrative counseling' as it explores the myths that we believe about ourselves, and the myths that others believe about us. Such myths help us make sense of the world, which form profoundly the way we are perceived in our own eyes and in society's eyes. This forms our acts and our present and potential reactions.
The Narrative approach sees problems as being distinct from people and cultures. Problems such as anxiety or depression aren't the whole tale of someone's existence, yet such terms also affect personality and persuade the individual or family that they don't have the skills to get through difficulties. The effect of this issue is discussed and accepted during the clinical discussion. By contemplating tales of skills, experience, expectations and beliefs, alternative solutions are more apparent and thus open to reduce the problem's impact.
