COUNSELLING SERVICES

What is Counselling? (a definition*)

Counselling is the skilled and principled use of relationship to facilitate self- knowledge, emotional acceptance and growth and the optimal development of personal resources. The overall aim is to provide an opportunity to work towards living more satisfyingly and resourcefully.

Counselling relationships will vary according to need but may be concerned with:
  • Developmental issues
  • Addressing and resolving specific problems
  • Making decisions
  • Coping with crisis
  • Developing personal insights and knowledge
Working through feelings of inner conflict or improving relationships with others.
The counsellor’s role is to facilitate the clients work in ways that respect the client’s values, personal resources and capacity for self-determination.

What Techniques & Approaches Do We Use?

As counselling is a mature but evolving field there is a deep and wide body of knowledge and therapeutic approaches. Most counsellors will tend to focus on a manageable group of therapeutic approaches which they are competent, comfortable and find achieve the desired results for clients. In my practice I utilise a broad range of approaches but focus on three particular therapies. These are:
  • Solution focused Therapy (“SFT”)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (“CBT’)
  • Person Centred Therapy

Solution focused Therapy (“SFT”)

SFT moves client focus off of what's wrong and onto what's right, stresses the resources and skills clients have, and helps them take the role of expert (which they hold anyway) and take responsibility from there for setting their own goals and reaching them. It's not about what's missing and causes woe, but what's present and can lead to happiness. Solution building is the goal, and as you change the language that shapes how you think about the problem, you change the language that shapes how you think about the solution.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (“CBT’)

CBT is a treatment approach that is based on the concept that the way we think affects how we respond. People can interpret the same life event very differently, leading to many and varied emotional and behavioural consequences. Some of these consequences can be helpful, & some not so helpful in our day-to-day lives.

CBT therapy illustrates how a person’s thoughts about an event or situation directly influence how they feel, and how they react to or behave in that situation. Despite common knowledge, it is not actually the event or situation that directly impacts on how we feel and behave, but rather our thoughts about the event. The theories of cognitive therapy suggest that negative or unhelpful thoughts and beliefs are a significant factor in the development or exacerbation of depression, anxiety, anger, low self esteem, self defeating behaviours and difficulty with coping. Therefore, being able to identify and challenge these beliefs can assist a person to reduce distress and enhance their ability to cope in everyday life situations.

Person Centred Therapy

Devised by Carl Rogers and also called "Client-Centred" or "Rogerian" counselling, this is based on the assumption that a client seeking help in the resolution of a problem they are experiencing, can enter into a relationship with a counsellor who is sufficiently accepting and permissive to allow the client to freely express any emotions and feelings. This will enable the client to come to terms with negative feelings, which may have caused emotional problems, and develop inner resources. The objective is for the client to become able to see himself as a person, with the power and freedom to change, rather than as an object.

This key focus of this approach is on the client being able to develop a greater understanding of self in an environment which allows the client to resolve his or her own problems without direct intervention by the therapist.

What Aspects Of My Life Can Counselling Assist Me With?

I believe that counselling can assist with almost all aspects and / or issues experienced in life. Common reasons for seeking counselling include:
  • Workplace issues
  • Career advice
  • Personal event based issues (separation, redundancy, death of a loved one, illness etc)
  • Personal development/fulfilment
  • Emotional and/or coping support

PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES

Psychologists specialise in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a wide range of emotional, behavioural and relational issues.

They are trained in the use of specialised therapies. Psychologists treat people who are experiencing stress or distress in their lives for a variety of reasons. Often the distress impacts on their personal life, relationships, in their family or career. Engaging in therapy can help to address these difficulties and provide an opportunity for personal growth through self awareness and by acquiring new skills.

Reasons people seek therapy include:
  • Anxiety and fear
  • Depression and stress
  • Relationship issues
  • Family conflict
  • Anger management
  • Grief and loss
  • Concerns about children
A psychologist has a minimum of 6 years full-time university training and must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia. This ensures that they meet specific standards of competence and ethical practice.
