In the early 1900's Dr. William Sutherland D.O. became aware that bones in the skull moved in relation to each other and were not fused.
This was contrary to medical opinion of the era, and Dr Sutherland performed many experiments on himself to prove his theories.
By 1930 he had devised a system of treatment which he called Cranial Osteopathy, which focused on the manual release of cranial bone motion. Unfortunately Dr Sutherland's techniques were not readily accepted by the wider community at the time and were practiced by relatively few osteopathic doctors.
It wasn't until the early 1970's that this pioneering therapy was rediscovered by Dr. John Upledger, who was invited by the University of Michigan's College of Osteopaths to carry out research on the theories, along with a team of interdisciplinary researchers.
Dr. Upledger's work resulted in remarkable success with the treatment of autism, cerebral palsy and epilepsy, and his team went on to prove that the techniques can have profound beneficial effects at the physical, emotional and spiritual levels.
