What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is where thin needles are placed into points around the body to “re-balance” it. Acupuncture has been used for hundreds of years around the world – in China, Japan, Korea and other countries in the East. It treats the individual on physical, mental and emotional levels at the same time. Although acupuncture uses mostly needles, other means of treatment can also be used. These include cupping, moxibustion or gua sha.

What’s the difference between Japanese and Chinese acupuncture?

Japanese acupuncture comes from the same basis as Chinese Medicine, and uses many of the same theories. The main differences are that Japanese acupuncturists rely more on touch in diagnosinf and finding points. Needling is also quite different, using very thin needles placed more shallowly and with little movement. This leads to more gentle treatments for those who are more needle-shy.

Who has acupuncture?

People use acupuncture in different ways. Some people use acupuncture to help with their symptoms or illnesses. Other people use it to support their general health even if they aren’t sick. Acupuncture can be used by anyone of any age, young or old.

What can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture can treat a wide range of problems. This might include pain, e.g. frozen shoulder or back ache, or ‘internal’ conditions such as headaches, hayfever, digestive or women’s health problems.

Clinical trials are beginning to show how well acupuncture works in a number of areas. For example, it can help with osteoarthritis, back pain, headaches or nausea/ vomiting. A World Health Organization (WHO) review of clinical trials involving acupuncture lists a different problems which have been treated with acupuncture.

How does acupuncture work?

The theory is that acupuncture affects the body’s energy or ‘qi’. Illness and pain start when this energy cannot flow properly. This may be because of emotional or physical stress, poor nutrition, or injury. Acupuncture balances qi in the meridians (the energy channels inthe body), allowing the body to return to a state of balance and to heal itself. From a more scientific point of view, the acupuncture has a variety of effects on the body. It may release your body’s natural painkillers, or regulates different body systems such as the nervous system or hormones.

About Me

My name is Jerrold, and I am originally from the UK. After three years of training I graduated with a Diploma and Honors degree (BSc) in Acupuncture.

Since arriving in Melbourne, I’ve registered with the Chinese Medicine Registration Board (CMRB). I am now a fully insured and registered practitioner.

Acupuncture has always been a big part of my culture and family. In fact, my grandmother was a herbalist, so you could say it’s in the blood! I was always interested in complementary and alternative medicine and I decided to take the plunge and retrain. I haven’t looked back since.
Acupuncture allows me to still make a difference in people’s lives (I used to work for charities and non-profits), but in a more hand’s on way. I love it because it’s both rewarding yet humbling. It lets me improve a person’s quality of life, which is great job satisfaction! But every day is also a chance to learn from my patients and improve myself.

My practice focuses on Japanese acupuncture, as I like how gentle it can be. I’ve been lucky to have learned a little from great teachers such as Stephen Birch, and have undertaken further training in Meridian Therapy and Yoshio Manaka’s Yin Yang Balancing system. I constantly try to develop my skills in order to benefit my patients.

As well as private practice, I also work as a volunteer practitioner at the Hands on Health clinic in Collingwood, a community service that provides access to acupuncture.
