Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese internal Medicine is the basis of all specialities of Chinese Medicine.
Apart from Acupuncture, the Chinese herbal medicine forms integral part of TCM and it has been practised in the Orient for thousands of years.
The practitioner of Chinese medicine has two means of delivering herbs. The first and still most popular method in China, is the dispensing of dried herbs that are boiled and decocted into a tea. The second are patent medicines.
This clinic dispenses only TGA approved patent medicines and they can be in the following formats :
- Pills and tablets
- Powders (can be taken directly or boiled & taken as a draft)
- Granules
- Plasters and ointments (applied locally eg. for bruising, sprain, pain ...)
- Liniments ( herbs/herbal oils extracts used topically for pain, trauma ...)
As part of traditional chineese medicine other modalities like :
cupping, moxibustion, earcandling and Reflexology can also be applied.
As some conditions require longer course of treatment - Prepared chinese herbs are additional choice of treatment.
Appart from providing main stream Acupuncture treatments and Massage, this clinic specializes in Birthing Acupuncture and general Acupuncture in Obstetrics.
Therefore if you are planing a natural birth whether it be at birth centre, hospital or at home please do not hesitate to enquire. Appart from the treatment you will also receive an information about registered midwives and how they can look after you during the pregnancy and birth.
Acupuncture
History and Practice
Acupuncture, which is part of Chinese Medicine, is the oldest system of medicine in use today and its effectiveness has been clinically proven for over two thousand years.
It is said in Chinese history that acupuncture developed in the eastern part of the country. The evidence has been found in the Shan Hai Jing classic, which says that "the foot of the mountains of the eastern ranges was littered with stone needles". Further evidence of ancient practise of inserting a needle into human body was a discovery of bone carvings dated from period 21st-11th century BC.
The application of acupuncture involves stimulating various places on body surfaces.
These places are called acupuncture points and when stimulated they produce a range of therapeutic effects depending on the location:
- Regional therapeutic effect - involves local tissues
- Remote therapeutic effect - involves distal tissues, as acupuncture points are linked by 14 meridians (channels) they have a distal effect on tissues along the same or linked meridian
- Specific therapeutic effect - a specific point has a specific therapeutic effect, for example point BL-67 which is used to correct malpositioned foetus (experimental research has shown that stimulation of BL-67 by moxa (special burning herb) leads to secretion of adrenocortical hormone which leads to increased foetal activity).
Other therapeutic effects:
Analgesic effect, Homeostatic regulation, Immune enhancing, Sedating and Calming effect.
Means of stimulation of Acupuncture points:
Acupuncture points can be stimulated by very fine needles, laser, electroacupuncture, pressure and moxa (special heat producing herb) and magnets.
The sensation felt at the site of stimulation can be described as numbness, distention, soreness or heaviness and sometimes lasts for up to 2hrs after the treatment. Acupuncture involves complex neurohumoral mechanisms and effects appear to be induced by at least three body reactions. They are local tissue reactions, neurological stimulation and hormone regulation.
