Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndromes represent a group of risk factors that increase a person’s risk of stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease. The risk factors are:
- High blood pressure
- excess abdominal weight
- low levels of ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL cholesterol)
- insulin resistance, where your cells don't respond to insulin and your blood sugar levels rise.
Criteria of Diagnosis
To be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome three of these five risk factors need to be identified by your health practitioner.
- Elevated waist circumference (population specific).
- Elevate triglyceride levels ≥ 1.7 mmol/L
- Reduced HDL-C <1.0mmol/L in men, <1.3 mmol/L in women.
- Elevated blood pressure ≥ 130 systolic or ≥ diastolic.
- Elevated fasting glucose ≥ 5.5 mmol/L
