When Did People Start Using Herbal Medicine?

As the name suggests, herbal medicine uses plants (seeds, fruits, roots, leaves, bark, and/or flowers) for medicinal purposes. It is also known as botanical medicine or phytomedicine. For thousands of years, herbalism has been used as the primary or alternative form of medicine for different civilizations around the world.

It is believed that way before recorded history plants have been used for medicinal purposes. The earliest recorded use of plants as medicine goes as far back as 3000 B.C. in ancient Egyptian and Chinese historical texts.

Traditional medical systems such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine were developed around the use of herbal therapies. Likewise, herbs were used in the healing rituals of indigenous cultures such as African and Native American.

What is more amazing is that scientific research has found that similar plants have been used by different cultures for the same purposes.

Herbal Medicine In Our Current Era

Now, with the advent of technological advances in clinical research and analysis as well as manufacturing and quality control, there is far greater value placed on the strength of herbal medicine in the treatment and prevention of disease.
