What Does Functional Medicine Do?
Functional medicine finds the underlying causes for your illness or injury through energetic regulatory disturbances of your entire body which appear as what can be called functional disturbances. The start of a pathogenic process which will then manifest as recognisable disease or injury will appear as functional disturbances. These upsets in your system develop when your body can no longer cope or compensate for the weakness or injury caused by an illness.
While traditional medicine states that the causes of disease are based upon pathological changes in the morphology of different tissues and organs, functional medicine points at functional disturbances as the culprits.
Some studies have found that 70% of patients who suffer from functional disturbances present in clinics with obvious symptoms but with no morphological diagnosis determined.
How Does Functional Medicine Work?
Functional medicine physicians will spend time with you, listen to your past medical and family histories. He or she will then map out your personal timeline before and during your condition. Your physician will then look at your interactions with regards to genetic, environment, and lifestyle factors that can influence your short-term or long-term health as well as acute or chronic disease.
After a comprehensive initial assessment, laboratory and diagnostic tests will then be performed to gain more information about your overall health and well-being. The results of these tests combined with the initial assessment will allow your physician to create a customised treatment plan including medicines and future consultations and tests depending on your presentation.
