What Is Sound Healing?

Sound Therapy has been around for as long as man could make noise. Indigenous peoples have used singing, drums, rattles, and singing bowls as ways of healing for centuries.

Our bodies are acutely sensitive to noise, and although we realise this fact, we rarely think about it or consider the implications that this can have. For example, think of the last time you heard an ambulance speeding past or the spine tingling screech of fingernails over a chalkboard. How did it make you feel?

The late Edgar Cayce predicted that sound and music therapy would become the medicine of the future. Modern science is just now recognizing what the ancient traditions have known for years that everything has a sound wave. We all have our own frequency or if you like, our own radio station. Today sound healing is rapidly gaining in popularity as a safe alternative to some medical therapies.

How Can Sound Heal?

In order to understand the healing potential of sound it is important to consider what recent discoveries in modern science have revealed. By examining the minutest parts of our bodies, scientists have discovered that we are not made of solid matter, but are a body of vibrating energy. In fact, every single thing from thought and emotion to water and earth is pure vibration. What differentiates each thing is the frequency and vibration at which they resonate. The slower the vibrational rate, the more dense the substance.

So what about the human body? A liver cell has a different frequency to a kidney cell and bones vibrate at a slower rate than blood plasma. Other energetic beings like trees, animals, crystals, earth have their own unique vibration. Even thought and emotion have a vibration, they vibrate at a much higher frequency than solid matter.

Why is this important?

Because each vibration emits a sound, whether we hear it audibly or not. Just because we can’t hear it, doesn’t mean an object isn’t emitting a sound.

So, basically we all have our own symphony. Sometimes when a group of cells alters their vibration, this can then impact us physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. This also has a knock on effect as the body is interconnected. When one area is out of tune, then it can impact other frequencies in our symphony. This can be positive as well as negative.

What Happens in a Sound Healing Session?

You will be lying down, with eyes closed and an assortment of instruments will be used like the drum, rattle, Tibetan bowl, tuning fork or even your own voice. Some items may be placed on the body so that you can feel the vibration or the instruments will be placed around you and played. You may be asked to make certain sounds either out loud or in your mind.

The voice is a great indicator of vitality and is one of the most powerful avenues of human expression. You may feel some sounds triggering feelings in different parts of the body, have different emotions come up, or have a feeling of complete relaxation.
