What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release is a light-touch hands-on therapeutic art. It is

  • HIGHLY EFFECTIVE
  • Safe
  • GENTLE

Briefly, what happens during a treatment?

Sustained, light, non-invasive pressure is applied directly into your skin and into the layers of the myofascial tissue at the sites of a restriction. As my hands listen to feedback from your tissue, I wait for permission to sink in more deeply until the restriction releases. As the restriction dissolves your myofascial tissue begins to soften, elongate, normalise and hydrate. Consequently, the trauma, stress and pain caused by the restriction releases, and your body aligns structurally.

Less is More

What is Myofascia? Why is Fascia therapeutically significant?

Healthy Fascia

In its natural state, fascia is a multilayered flexible connective tissue type extending from the top of our head to the tip of our toes. Like a yarn in a sweater or a spider web it connected each body part with the other, reaching into and investing itself into every physiological system and structure (cells, muscle fibres, organ and more). Fascia surrounds, protects and separates different areas of the brain (meninges), and surrounds, protects and innervates bone tissue, the spine, blood vessel, nerve tissue and organs.

The metaphor of a tent applies here. When you put up a tent, if only one peg is out of alignment, the whole tent will lose its structural integrity. The same is true for Fascia. A restriction in the arm, for instance, will impact into the entire web of myofascia throughout our body. The opposite is true also: by treating a particular restriction the release will flow on into the entire web.

Functions of Fascia

Its functions are manyfold and I will only mention afew:

  • Maintaining the structural integrity of the Human body
  • Maintaining efficient posture by suspending the body into an upright position
  • Maintaining Effective movement
  • Directing and distributing forces throughout the body to prevent injury.

Restriction in the fascia cause impaired posture and movement. It allows for injuries as due to the restrictions the fascia cant direct external forces (hit, fall, etc.) effectively away from the point of impact. Restricted fascia is dehydrated and shortened. Friction, decreased mobility, pain and inflammation are the result. Indeed, when movement becomes restricted it requires more energy to do what is required of us. Likewise, organs, nerve tissue and other structures have to work harder as toughened and inflexible fascia impacts on their function. This is the process by which dysfunctional fascia causes trauma, fatigue and stress.
