What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a system of health care that focuses on the treatment of the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, muscles and connective tissue). Osteopathy also looks at the effects structural problems have on the body’s function.
Everyone from a new-born to the elderly can be managed both safely and effectively, so why not give us a call today to organise your next consultation or treatment plan.
What Conditions Be Treated With Osteopathy?
Many people visit an Osteopath for back or neck pain, yet osteopathic treatments can also help other musculo-skeletal problems, such as:
- Headaches
Migraines
Sciatica
Arthritis
Joint Pain
Carpel Tunnel syndrome
Some injuries from road and domestic accidents, i.e. whiplash
Sports injuries such as tennis elbow
Postural and mobility problems
Knee, ankle and foot problems
TMJ/Jaw problems
RSI/Overuse injuries
Neuralgia
Osteopathic treatment starts with a comprehensive history and physical examination. This includes how your whole spine functions as well as specific structural and neurological testing.
A diagnosis is made and the techniques chosen for your complaint depend on your history, how long the complaint has been present, your age and many other factors. Your Osteopath will then select from a wide variety of techniques to help care for your health condition or ailment. These therapies may include ultrasound, laser, stretching, gentle spinal manipulation, spinal mobilisation, muscle release and trigger point techniques.
Further advice for your recovery may include home exercise programs, postural recommendations, lifting procedures, diet advice, stress management and referral to other specialists for management of all your health conditions.
Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your nervous system controls virtually every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. Chiropractors are able to help a wide variety of problems when those problems can be traced back to a problem in the spine or joints.
Why Come & See One Of Our Chiropractors?
To be able to recognise the problems involving the musculoskeletal system Chiropractors have to undergo extensive training. This training consists of some 4000 hours of structured lectures such as anatomy which includes human dissection, pathology, microbiology, physiology, chemistry, physics, X-Ray physics and interpretation, diagnosis and management, chiropractic science and technique.
A further 1500 hours is then spent in supervised clinical situations.
The courses available in Australia require five years full-time study and it takes as many hours to gain a chiropractic degree as it does to obtain a medical degree. All of the Chiropractors here at Healthwise have completed this training, so yo can be
What To Expect During a Treatment?
On a typical first visit to a chiropractic clinic the chiropractor will take a complete history from the patient and perform a comprehensive physical/neurological/orthopaedic examination of the area of concern.
X-Rays will often be taken by the chiropractor to complete the diagnosis.
If the chiropractor feels that the patient may benefit from the chiropractic treatment he or she may recommend a number of adjustments designed to improve the function of the area relating to the problems.
Some patients choose to continue with chiropractic care after their initial treatment in order to maintain their musculoskeletal system at its optimum level of function.
