Yoga
Yoga comes in many different 'shapes and sizes', and here in the West the most popular forms tend to be those that deal principally with physical health and well being - particularly in relation to fitness and flexibility. However, as good as they are, they barely scratch the surface of the potential that yoga offers.
I utilize the teaching of Iyengar in relation to postural alignment, but at the same time advocate, and adopt, the softer, more individualized, approach developed by Shri Krishnamacharya (who was Iyengar's teacher). In bringing participants to a greater awareness and activation of their subtle energy body (think of chakras, acupuncture & meridians here) I draw on the teaching of Swami Satyananda as well as the DRU Yoga tradition. DRU yoga also has the capacity to open one up to a very 'heart centered' emotional state of being that is beautiful to experience. By harmonizing the breath with the performance of asanas a meditative mindset is achieved. The overall effect can be, and often is, quite powerful. And remember; regular practice has the capacity to slow down the aging process!
In every class I begin with a gentle warm-up before proceeding to more active asanas. The class is brought to a close with a guided relaxation in the style of Yoga Nidra - the yoga of conscious sleep.
All my classes are suitable for beginners as well as more advanced practitioners - because of the individualized approach that supports variations in capability through modifications to the asanas and/or the use of props.
Classes:
Tuesdays from 7pm to 8.30pm
Wednesdays 7pm to 8pm
MEDITATION:
I began my journey into meditation during the 1970's with Zen Buddhism - becoming an ordained lay Buddhist under Roshi Kennett, and with the Kashmir Shaivism of Baba Muktananda. Zazen remains an integral part of my spiritual practice, and I also remain connected to the meditative yoga of Kashmir Shaivism through Swami Shankarananda (a disciple of Baba Muktananda). In addition I have studied meditation in the DRU Yoga Tradition. The classes I offer are structured according to the teachings of DRU Yoga - but as a teacher I inevitably draw on all of my experience in the realms of meditation.
The classes I offer are scheduled in Terms of 8 weeks duration, and are structured to provide a gradual progression into the deeper areas of meditative practice. Every class commences witha gentle exercise routine to 'loosen up' and prepare participants for meditation. This is followed by specific breathing exercises that lead one into the meditative state - and seamlessly precede the actual seated meditation itself. The meditation is immediately followed by a period of relaxation in the style of Yoga Nidra - the Yoga of Conscious Sleep.
Sundays from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
