Alexander Technique Teacher Program

This course is intended to enable teachers to develop a deep practical understanding of Alexander’s principles, which they can then apply in an infinite number of ways to any situation.

During your training, you will be asked to explain the underlying reason for Alexander's words and for the “traditional procedures” he developed. As the work is related to real life, the question, “why?” will be asked multiple times.

The Canberra Alexander Teacher Training program is not only innovative, but it is also firmly rooted in the traditional approach, with consistent daily content that builds a strong skill base for trainees in an environment that is unlike anything else in Australia.

The Alexander Technique relates to our lived experience, impacting how we relate to people, interact with our daily environment, and participate in daily activities.

There has been almost no research in the world on how to train Alexander Technique teachers. However, this teaching program has two key differences from traditional programs:

  • Competence is more important than hours. Although the expected conventional hours are 1600 hours over three years, this is not required. Face-to-face hours are 7.5 per week over three days, plus attendance at additional workshops.
  • Furthermore, students are required to complete a minimum of 6 hours per week of logged practice away from school, consisting of a broad range of closely specified activities. By the third year, the number of face-to-face hours increases as supervised practice lessons or workshops are added.

Taking part in a three-year program is a major commitment on both sides. It would be good to attend current classes, participate in an intensive, or have some one-on-one lessons with them.

The following is an overview of what each year looks like:
