What Is The Feldenkrais Method?
The Feldenkrais Method is named after its inventor, Dr Moshe Feldenkrais, Israeli judo master, internationally renowned physicist and educator.
Feldenkrais utilises 'sensori-motor learning', a systematic exploration of movement, which helps participants overcome inefficient or uncomfortable posture and movement habits. Feldenkrais is not about exercise or therapy. It is actually about learning. By incorporating an awareness of how all parts of the body can move in a more synchronised way, participants can discover greater flexibility and range of movement without having to stretch. Feldenkrais Practitioners have participated in at least 4 years of professional training.

What Happens In A Session?
The method is taught in two different ways:
- Individual lessons (called Functional Integration); and
- Group lessons (called Awareness Through Movement).
Many Feldenkrais Practitioners are also qualified in another field, such as physiotherapy, dance or medicine.
Even in the course of a single lesson participants have reported greater power without the need for strengthening, simply by finding a more efficient way to move. Click here for more information. Go to 'Group Classes' to find our timetable.
Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement Classes
Group lessons in the Feldenkrais Method are known as Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lessons. They have the advantage that students learn to be independent in using movement to relieve aches and pains. Positive changes are made without hands-on assistance from a practitioner.
At Free2Move's Awareness Through Movement classes, you will learn ways to keep the whole body both supple and strong, releasing pain and stiffness and restoring more natural and upright posture. As well as being very relaxing these classes help you become more aware of easier ways to do everyday things.
A healthy spine promotes improved functioning of the whole body, just as improved functioning of the limbs supports a healthy spine! Come and discover how pleasurable movement can be in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
Feldenkrais Individual Sessions (Functional Integration)
Individual Feldenkrais lessons are called 'Functional Integration'. You lie comfortably clothed on a low padded table and the practitioner guides you through a series of gentle but precise movements, which free restrictions and patterns of holding in the nervous system and musculature.
Working on an individual basis gives more rapid results, as the hands-on sessions are customised to your needs. You learn to move more easily and comfortably, taking the strain off painful and overused parts of the body and re-awakening stiff and underused parts. This helps the body to function in a more efficient and harmonious manner. The ideal way to learn is to attend classes and have a few individual lessons, especially if you have chronic pain or movement difficulties.
How To Enrol
Ring or email us today to book your first Feldenkrais 'Functional Integration' lesson with a Perth Feldenkrais Practitioner who is also a Physiotherapist. It is possible to enrol straight into the Feldenkrais 'Awareness Through Movement' Floor classes without attending an individual session first. If you have pain or movement issues or medical problems we strongly recommend at least one individual session first.
