It could be seen as one of the most painful experiences we go through in our lives, when we are exposed to the loss of someone whom we loved, who mattered to us or something that gave us joy, purpose, a sense of security and or value.
Grief can also feel complicated, particularly if the relationship with the person who died was strained or difficult or we feel we should be further along the grief process that we are. We may feel pressure from others to "move on".
Grief is an individual experience and as unique as our fingerprint. There is no right or wrong way to grieve and no specific timeline, however having some guidance through the process of grief can be very helpful for some people.
Grief comes in many forms.
Sometimes our grief is delayed. We pack it up and put it away to be able to manage and cope with life. It can be hard to try and face it on our own when it comes to the surface.
Sometimes we feel very guilty regarding the death of a loved one. If only we had done things differently we may say to ourselves. Our suffering and pain can be compounded by these feelings of guilt and can give us a feeling of being stuck.
Grief can also open old wounds and we may feel more vulnerable and anxious than we did before the loss.
Common feelings that come up during grief are
- Shock and disbelief
- Numbness
- Overwhelm
- Denial
- Relief
- Intense Sadness
- Heartbreak
- Anger
- Lonliness
Sometimes we need support to process and feel our feelings.
We can't heal what we don't feel David Kessler
It can be hard to talk to friends and family about how we are feeling when we are grieving as we may believe we don't want to burden them with our problems. Sometimes people may feel ashamed that they are sad, angry, lonely or even when they are feeling happy at times.
Talking to a grief informed therapist may be very helpful to unburden yourself and to find relief, comfort and possibly growth and wisdom.
How I help meet the needs of someone in grief
According to David Kessler, a grief expert and author of many books on grief and loss
We have 6 specific needs when we are experiencing grief and loss.
To have our pain witnessed
To express our feelings
To release the burden of guilt
To be free of old wounds
To integrate the Pain and the Love
To find meaning in life after the loss.
As a grief educator and therapist, I can guide you along your pathway through grief, supporting your through the inevitable rocky terrain and help you find your way to a place where you have the opportunity to eventually find some peace, integrate the pain with the love and find some meaning and growth following the loss.
My experience as a registered nurse and midwife enabled me to work with people who were facing death, the loss of a loved one and loss of health. I have supported families when their baby has died or when their child has been diagnosed with a disability or serious illness.
In my work as a therapist and mindfulness practitioner I have supported people on their grief journey. The lived experience of my own grief allows me to bring compassion and the knowledge that grief requires a dedicated space. It requires time and patience
I can help support you to find some peace of mind, through taking the time to listen to you and your unique experience of grief and loss.
You have the opportunity to identify and explore the many emotions and feelings that come with grief. Many people feel angry as well as sad following a significant loss, however find it hard to feel heard and validated. The emotions surrounding grief are many and varied and often just require normalisation.
We live in a grief illiterate society and may not receive the care and support we thought we would get. Sometimes we just need a little bit of help.
Let me help and support you to remember in your own time, with more peace and less pain.
