Emma Spivey (Prakasha)
FRYOG Dip (Friends of Yoga International), YTAA Level II Teacher (Yoga Teachers Association Australia), BYTA (British Yoga Teachers Association), Fitness Australia Member, RSA/YMCA Fitness instructor, IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association)
Born 26 April 1972 in Surrey, United Kingdom
As long as Emma can remember she has been involved with body movement. Her early years were spent studying various forms of dance and by the age of 12 she was qualified as a dance Teacher. Emma attended a London drama school focusing on drama, music and dance. "When dancing I feel a deep connection to the universe it is as if time stands still and all the suffering in the world disappears". These were her first yogic experiences.
In 1992 Emma made her first trip to India in search of a deeper meaning in life. The events that took place over the proceeding 2 years changed her life forever and paved the way for a more holistic way of life. On her return from India Emma went back into education (1994) to study psychology, philosophy, literature and history with the intention of studying Eastern religion and dance at university. During these times Emma studied yoga with various yoga teachers both in India, America and the UK.
Emma has been teaching body movement in various forms professionally since 1997 after giving birth to her first son. In 1998 Emma's mother left her body after battling leukemia. This was a turning point in Emma's life.
In the year 2000 Emma met her Guru Swami Satya Ratyanada Saraswati and began her training as a yoga teacher through the Friends of Yoga International Society at the Yoga Seekers Ashram. Swamiji is a direct disciple of Swami Satyananda Saraswati and teachings deeply reflect this.
Forever a student, once graduating in 2003 Emma went on to further her studies. She studied Yoga Nidra with Swamiji (Yoga Seekers), Meditation through Swami Saradananda (British Yoga Teachers Association), Yoga Therapy Foundation at London Biomedical Trust/Yoga therapy Centre, Vinyasa Flow Yoga with Shiva Rea (The Life Centre London) and Applied Anatomy and Physiology with Simon Borg Olivier (Yoga Synergy- Sydney), Relax and Rene Restorative Yoga (Level One) with Judith Hanson Lasater, Donna Farhi's Sydney Yoga Intensives, Assisting and Adjusting, Mind Body Life, Sydney, Various Asana and Yoga Energetics, Yoga Institute and Continuous Anatomy and philosophy education with Judith Hanson Lasater, Doug Keller, Tom Myers, Marlysa Sullivan, Susi Hately, Julie Gudmestad, Natasha Rizopoulos, Richard Miller.
Emma, her Husband and two sons are now living permanently in Avoca on the Central Coast where she is sharing her passion for all things Yoga. Emma aims to explore the ancient teachings of yoga in her classes with a modern twist with love and laughter at the heart of her teaching.
WHAT IS YOGA
"At a time when the world seems to be at a loss, rejecting past values without being able to establish new ones, yoga provides a means for people to find their own way of connecting with their true selves. Through this connection with their real selves it is possible for people to manifest harmony in the current age, and for compassion to emerge where hitherto there has been none."
A.P.M.B - pg.5 - Swami Santyananda Saraswati
Yoga has existed for thousands of years and was originally practiced in secret. At this time Yoga was not documented. The teachings were however, handed down from teacher to disciple by word of mouth for the generations to come.
Any and everybody can benefit from yoga no matter what their level of fitness. Yoga can be adapted to suit the needs of many. Yoga offers mental, physical and spiritual benefits all of which are accumulative although, may be felt to some degree after only one class. Some people refer to the feeling after their first session as being high or euphoric.
Yoga is quite often taken up as a form of stress release or as an exercise class. Yoga does offer these benefits coupled with vitality and a general sense of well being. However, we know this to be a very small part of the complete yoga experience.
Yoga is a system of postures, breathing practices, energy control techniques and meditation. All of these tools are used in order to evolve the human consciousness. Yoga is not like a gymnastic class where the focus is on controlling the body. The main aim of yoga is to control the whole of the being, especially the mind (as in 'Raja Yoga') to experience the unity between ‘individual’ and ‘universal self’.
Yoga means ‘union’ or to ‘yoke’. Yoga is harmony and balance of the individuals mind, body and soul. The aim of yoga practice is for the whole being (mind. body and the soul) to unite with the higher consciousness or ‘God’. The individual soul or ‘the self’ is referred to in yogic philosophy as ‘Atman’. The ‘universal self’ or ‘cosmic energy’ (God) is known as ‘Braham’. Yoga therefore is the ‘union’, blending of ‘Atman’ and ‘Brahman’.
Yoga is a way of life, a way of being, a philosophical concept to live by, it is not a religion. Yoga embraces all religions. Therefore it is open for everyone to experience, as yogis believe we all come from and return to the same source. With this in mind why would yoga exclude anyone when we are believed to be one and the same.
