Focus areas
My name is Eleanor (Elly) Collins. I studied at the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Christchurch, New Zealand and in 2012 graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Health Science, majoring in Acupuncture.
After Graduating and relocating to Ballarat I took some time to collect myself and lay foundations in a new city. It didnt take long to find myself warmly welcomed into a friendly clinic sharing with other excellent practitioners of high integrity. So I'm now happy to stay here for some time, get to know the good people of Ballarat and develop my practice.
My clinic provides space for people to reconnect with health and well being using a body of medicine that has been empirically proven for thousands of years. The combination of ancient philosophical theories with the appreciation of modern science engenders a holistic and scientifically aware practice.
My clinic is a place you can receive treatment that provides your body the message of self-regulation for harmonious function. This message is provided by actual acupuncture treatments, but also with thorough explanation of what I am treating within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory.
What can I expect form an acupuncture treatment?
Acupuncture is generally a pain free form of treatment as the needles are so fine there is little or no trauma to the tissue. Once the needles are inserted the practitioner will manipulate the needles to obtain the beneficial "qi" (chi) sensation, which has been described as a dull ache or pressure, numbness, tingling or just a strange feeling that is difficult to describe.
Other forms of treatment that your acupuncturist will employ are Moxabustion which is the burning of special herbs over specific points or areas and Cupping, a method of using cups with an internal vacuum that suction onto the skin and massage deep tissues.
How Does Acupuncture work?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is thought that qi is the fundamental entity of the whole body and that this qi exists within a gradient of density; ranging from all electrochemical reactions, emotional states, metabolic processes to the denser physical tissues and fluids.
With fine, single use acupuncture needles, acupuncture points are stimulated in a certain way to alter the bodies qi. A treatment that you receive from an acupuncturist practising Traditional Chinese Medicine will have been tailored to your individual condition and will work by altering (supplementing or removing excess qi), so as to regain your natural state of health.
There are many theories of how this translates to the scientific model of the body; some are seen to regulate the nervous system, the endocrine (hormonal) system, activate or regulate the immune system and increase blood circulation. Regardless of how it works, acupuncture is still being proven to be very effective and beneficial for many ailments and conditions, with sustained benefits after the required series of treatments has been achieved.
What does Acupuncture treat ?
Acupuncture can be very effective for pain management and injury rehabilitation, hormonal imbalances, functional disturbances, sleeping disorders, genito-urinary disease, immune function and regulation, pregnancy and IVF support, gastrointestinal disorders, releasing stress, promoting emotional stability and improving energy and a sense of vitality.
Acupuncture can also be great to treat specific symptoms (headaches, stiffness, swelling, rash and pain) or for specific ailments (carpal tunnel syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, tennis elbow ect). The wonderful thing is that as Chinese Medicine treats syndromes (or a collection of signs and symptoms) all symptoms have an interaptive value; this means that even the strangest things that you experiance can be interpreted in TCM and with correct application and comittment to the required therapys and comitment to healing with lifestyle. Of course I am happy to answer any questions you may have with regards to if acupuncture is a form of treatment that could be beneficial for your needs.
