Footwear services
At Riverina Podiatry Group we can provide advice and consultation to best choose the right footwear for you. Speak with our podiatrists for more personalised advice. Below are some handy tips to get you started:
- Heel counter - The back of the shoe which encloses the heel should be firm.
- Sole – The sole should flex across the ball of the foot and should not bend through the middle or arch area.
- Toe box – The area where the toes sit should be deep enough and of sufficient width to accommodate the toes comfortably.
- Fitting – A shoe is of correct length when there is up to a full thumb width between the longest toe and the end of the shoe.
- Fastening mechanism – So that the feet can be held firmly in the back of the shoes, it is essential to have either laces, Velcro straps or straps with buckles.
- Materials – Ensure that shoes are made from materials which breathe such as leather.
- Socks and hosiery – Ensure wherever possible that these have a high natural fibre content (wool or cotton).
Important note: Shoes should not be ‘broken in’. They should feel comfortable immediately.
