It would be great to know what diet, exercise and treatment actually works for you and with Ayurveda, understanding your body type is the fundamental to determining what therapies to follow.

Ayurveda is the 5000 year old system where a persons body type or dosha determines what influences them, what they are likely to excel in and how to rectify the imbalances in their body which leads to disease.

Although it originates in India, you dont need to adhere to an Indian diet (unless you really want to!) or follow unfamiliar practices. Just as Western medicine is of great benefit the world over, so too, will following Ayurvedic principles benefit you as you learn what your body needs to reach optimum health.

About Dr. Barri Phatarfod

(MBBS, FRACGP, Grad Dip. Ayur)

Located in Bondi and Rose Bay, Dr Barri Phatarfod integrates the ancient principles of Ayurveda with modern Western medicine. Dr. Barri Phatarfod (MBBS, FRACGP, Dip. Ayur), has been a general practitioner for 30 years and studied Ayurveda under Deepak Chopra in USA. She follows the Hierarchy of Health model she designed following Maslows Hierarchy of Needs from the 1940s.

Dr. Barri Phatarfod became interested in alternative methods of healing after seeing many people benefit from practices outside of the Western model. The 5000 year old Ayurvedic system of healing was intriguing since it explored the idea that cures could come from nature itself and be tailored to the individual.

Barri studied Ayurvedic medicine first in the USA and later in India. She uses it to complement her general practice, where minimal changes to diet and lifestyle can alleviate conditions and reduce the need for pharmaceuticals and even for natural supplements.

What to expect from your consultation
  • Your initial consultation will be between 45- 60 minutes.
  • During this time your presenting problems will be explored and any previous treatments you may have had will be discussed.

Please bring old test results and reports if available.

Often we can determine your dosha type and commence an appropriate diet at this visit. In other cases we might need to do blood tests or other pathology and wait for the results before deciding the next course of action.

As Dr Barri Phatarfod is an integrative doctor, she works closely with your other health practitioners including naturopaths, massage therapists and any medical specialists to provide a holistic approach.

Follow up consultation is generally 20-30 minutes.

Living Ayurveda integrates the ancient principles of Ayurvedic living with modern Western medicine.

By employing gentle, non-invasive changes to our diet and lifestyle we can reduce and eventually eliminate the need for pharmaceuticals and supplements to maintain our health.

At Living Ayurveda you can feel safe that you are receiving a comprehensive treatment because we blend the scientific medical analysis of blood tests and other diagnostic tools, with natural Ayurvedic principles.

Ayurveda recognises that everyone has their own unique constitution which requires individual diet, health and lifestyle practices. According to Ayurveda there are three distinct doshas or body energies; Vata, Pitta & Kapha. Most of us have all three in varying amounts usually with one or two predominating. It is these predominant doshas which identify an individuals body type.

By identifying our dosha we can
  • Understand why we have the physical ailments we suffer from,
  • Compensate for any imbalances by modifying our diet and lifestyle,
  • Appreciate our emotional disposition and preference for certain activities and foods,
  • Maximise our potential in work, health and relationships by enhancing the positive attributes of our constitution,
  • Adapt to changing life circumstances gracefully with minor adjustments to our routine.

The dietary modifications suggested are easy to implement and adaptable to your current life, requiring minimal expense and change.

As Ayurveda is non-invasive, you can continue to take any current medications while your body is repairing itself.
