Services Offered
Individual Counselling
When you're troubled by a situation either at home, or work, in your personal relationship or a friendship, it can be helpful to reach out for assistance. There are also many people who find it easier to discuss their personal issues with someone they don't know and this is where professional counsel can help.
Through counselling you can gain clarity around your discomfort, explore the choices you can make, and take action if you need to.
Family Counselling
People seek family counselling for a variety of reasons, including (but not limited to):
- Communication breakdown
- A blending of two families or different cultures
- Conflict between parents and children
- A family member with behavioural problems, addiction or chronic health condition
- Crisis or trauma
- Transition or loss in the family
These factors can cause stress and strain for family members and impact individual well-being. Providing family counselling to two, three, or multiple family members in a group environment can provide significant assistance.
Couples Counselling
Couples counselling helps couples to identify unhelpful patterns in their relationship that have created hurt and disconnection.
It also gives couples new relationship tools to help them navigate their conflict through to successful resolution.
Sessions can be 60 or 90 minutes, and couples usually need somewhere between 6 and 12 sessions to get their relationship back on track. The most common problem with couples counselling is that couples will leave counselling too early (after 2-3 sessions), so they fall back into old patterns and any gains made are short lived. Remember lasting change takes time.
Depression and Grief
The symptoms of depression can strike without warning, and they often creep up on people so that they are not easily identifiable. Or there can be a history of depressive episodes which can date right back to childhood.
When we've been trying to cope with uncomfortable feelings and negative thoughts on our own for more than a few weeks and it's not working, we need to reach out for assistance and support.
Counselling can help you understand what is going on psychologically, and provides the education, guidance, and support you need to get your life back on track.
Anxiety
A little anxiety now and then is a normal reaction to various situations in our everyday lives, usually as a response to external stressors.
But for some people prolonged anxiety (regular feelings of nervousness, fear, apprehension, or worry) interferes with every aspect of life, including work, school, family, relationships, socialising, and sleep.
By seeking professional help as soon as possible, you can prevent behaviour patterns from becoming more entrenched as new tools are taught that help you find comfort again.
Panic Attacks
A panic attack can be very frightening, and losing control over your body can be debilitating.
It occurs when you feel intense fear that comes on suddenly, accompanied by symptoms such as shortness of breath, palpitations, sweating, nausea, chest tightness, feeling faint/shaky, lack of concentration or feeling detached from your surroundings.
In seeking professional support, you gain an understanding of what is happening in your mind and body and learn new coping strategies to restore peace and harmony in your life.
Anger Management
For some people anger drives them into action; for others it’s suppressed as a way to manage uncomfortable feelings.
Suppressed anger can lead to pent up anger that gets triggered easily, and can be directed toward others inappropriately.
By attending our 4 session Anger Management Program clients get to understand what is happening psychologically while developing more emotional intelligence and improving their relationships.
