WHAT TO EXPECT
Your initial appointment will have a duration of 1.5 to 2 hours (you will be charged for 1 hour and this appointment may be scheduled after work if needed).
Goals
We will then discuss your therapy goals – they might be specific, like ‘I want to give up smoking’ or more general, ‘I want to be happy’ for instance.
About your life
We will then cover some general questions about your life. Often I will invite* and guide you through a process, to review your life journey; this can include art therapy, hypnotherapy, or a range of other processes, depending on your needs. These processes can be very insightful and can lead to the addition of other goals during therapy. The process/s on offer you will also give you an indication of my approach.
Treatment Plan
We will discuss your individual treatment plan and what you can expect. Every 6-7 sessions we will do a brief review of sessions thus far.
Further sessions:
I’m a person-centred counsellor, so whatever you bring to each session is what we work on, in conjunction with your overall treatment plan.
Further sessions usually have a duration of 1 – 1.5 hours, dependent on your needs.
*Invitation to do a process:
When I offer you a process, I will always explain it and reason for suggesting that particular process. If you don’t want to partake of a particular process then that’s quite ok. I will encourage you to at least give it a go, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
How many sessions will I need?
This will depend on your individual needs and aims, some people prefer to work through their issues intensively and efficiently, whilst others choose long-term support.
The initial stages of therapy will offer more effective results with weekly or fortnightly sessions. Further into your treatment, fortnightly or even monthly sessions may be suitable.
Confidentiality
Everything you discuss with me is confidential. However, because I’m bound by the Code of Ethics, the only time I will ever break that confidentially is if I strongly believe that you may seriously harm yourself or another person. I will discuss this with you, prior to contacting any authorities.
If you are under the age of 18, I will not discuss anything that you share with me to your parent/s or carer. You are my client, not your parent/s or carer.
I may discuss your case with my supervisor but your name, other people you discuss, locations etc will be altered to ensure your identity is anonymous. All professional counsellors are required to attend supervision (mentor/consultant).
What I ask from you
- Be on time for your appointment.
- If you need to reschedule, please do so with at least 24 hours’ notice to avoid a cancellation fee (which is the cost of the appointment). I am a reasonable person, if the cancellation is due to an emergency, the fee may be waived.
- Please do not arrive at your appointment intoxicated.
- Be prepared to work in your therapy sessions, as unfortunately I cannot do all the work for you.
- If possible, consider planning time for yourself after your sessions, or at least a quiet night at home.
