Our Counsellor & Psychotherapist
My name is Katherine Nelson, and I am the counsellor and psychotherapist here at Counselling @ Voxen. I specialise in providing psychotherapy for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families.
My practice offers a wide range of counselling services in a safe and private yet compassionate and supportive environment where you can heal and grow.
Our Counselling Services
Anger Management
We will start by identifying if indeed there are anger issues that need to be addressed by a psychotherapist.
The next step is to begin learning how to manage our anger. By identifying early signs of anger, trigger points, and learning calming methods coupled with the support of your psychotherapist, anger can be managed.
Many people with anger management issues struggle with identifying warning signs. Together, strategies that can help recognise them as well as calming techniques can be learned and practised.
Anxiety
Scientific generalisations of various anxiety disorders include:
- Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Experiencing anxious feelings over normal daily activities as well as overthinking upcoming simple events such as going to work or getting up in the morning, et cetera
- Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD): Experiencing uncomfortable feelings about going out or being in a social environment, and afraid of being embarrassed, offending someone, or not being liked or accepted by others.
- Panic Disorder: Repeated panic attacks resulting in intensive anxious feelings coming about suddenly
- Phobia Disorder: A heightened illogical fear in association with a particular creature, object, or situation.
The long-term side effects of nontreatment of these disorders can result in poor quality of life and tendency to progress into other psychological disorders.
Depression
The two types of depression include:
- Depression triggered by stressful events such as breakdowns in relationships, losing a job, grief from the loss of a loved one, personal health issues, family issues, the inability to make positive changes for oneself, et cetera.
- Depression as a predisposition in your family genetics. This type of depression can be brought about by the combination of your genetic pool, life experiences, and patterns of thinking along with high levels of stressful recurring situations.
It is important to seek mental health support from a trained and qualified professional once an individual identifies with any of the above.
Trauma
There are numerous trauma-related conditions. Examples include:
- Physical abuse
- Professional burnout
- Mental abuse
- Acute Stress
- Post-traumatic stress
- Domestic Violence
- Death of someone close
- Serious Illness
- Sexual assault
Trauma is individual-based and considerate of the person and age of the person. The fundamental pillars needed in attempting to heal the trauma are through (1) Safety, (2) Connections, and (3) Managing Emotions. Different types of therapies can be utilised.
