What is Chinese Medicine?

Chinese Medicine is a system that has been practiced by many for over 2000 years. Its main philosophy is to find the balance within your body and with the environment.

Chinese Medicine Practitioners aim to find the cause of the disease in order to treat the presenting condition. They base their diagnosis on the Chinese Medicine principles that include 5 important organ systems within the body and the yin and yang concept. The five organ systems incorporate digestion, nutrition, circulation within the body (including nervous, blood and breathing), emotional and mental state. All five organ systems are connected and can influence how the other systems function. Should one or more of these systems be damaged in some way either by diet, stress, environmental factors or trauma etc. then disease may occur.

In addition to the five organ system Chinese Medicine practitioners use the Yin and Yang concept when diagnosing. These are two elements within the body and surrounding environment that can influence how the other one operates. If a person should have too much or too little of one (either yin or yang) then disease may occur.

Practitioners aim to re adjust the body to its optimal physical state using methods such as acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. In some cases additional techniques called Moxibustion (warming technique) and cupping (suction technique) may be used. In addition to this diet and lifestyle changes may be recommended.
