Chiropractic is a physical therapy employing a variety of drug-free and non-surgical techniques to promote recovery from conditions that result in pain and restriction of movement.
Chiropractors have specialised training in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic conditions which lead to symptoms including:
- Neck and back pain
- Muscle spasms
- Sciatica
- Headaches
- Migraines
- Jaw pain
Chiropractors also treat sports injuries and work related conditions.
Chiropractic and your nervous system
Your nervous system consists of your brain, spinal cord and the millions of nerves controlling every cell in your body. The nervous system is protected by your skull and the 24 vertebrae of the spine which have moving joints. When exposed to the stresses of daily work and leisure activities, these spinal joints often lose their normal function resulting in pain or restricted motion. Chiropractors have specialised training in the diagnosis and management of neck, low back and other common musculoskeletal problems. Combined with exercise, postural advice and ergonomics Chiropractic care is an effective form of care for musculoskeletal conditions.
Safety and effectiveness
Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. Chiropractic care has been shown by scientific research to be efficacious is a treatment of choice for mechanical lower back pain. Unlike medication and surgery, chiropractic supports the body's ability to heal itself as opposed to just treating the symptoms.
Why do I need to have my spine checked?
Spinal health symptoms can be misleading and problems can often be tracked back to repeated micro trauma (constrained postures) accumulating over a long period of time or an old injury. The earlier your spine is checked the better the potential for minimising spinal degenerative change and achieving optimal spinal health.
Do I need X-rays?
This is able to be determined on a case-by-case basis. If x-rays are required, they are performed by Radiographers and reported on by medical Radiologists. These services are covered by Medicare.
What happens at my first Chiropractic visit?
A thorough history and comprehensive physical, orthopaedic and neurological examination will be carried out. If x-rays or other imaging (i.e. MRI, CT, US etc.) are necessary, these will be arranged and may require consultation with your Medical Doctor. The treatment usually begins during the first session. Everything will be explained to ensure that you have a full understanding of your problem and the prevention involved.
What if I have a work related or transport accident injury?
WorkCover, Comcare and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) cover most of the cost of Chiropractic treatment.
