What Does Acupuncture Feel Like? Does It Hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very fine, 0.2 of a millimetre actually. That’s as fine as your hair! It is not sharp like you’d expect but you will experience a dull heavy sensation in the muscle which is not at all painful. This feeling is called ‘de qi’ and signifies movement of Qi in the meridians. This is a good sign that your treatment is working. Most people describe acupuncture as an extremely relaxing and calming feeling.
Is Acupuncture Safe? Are There Side Effects?
Registered acupuncturists are required to be certified in Hygienic Needling Techniques and only use single use sterile disposable needles. It is also possible but very unlikely that bruising may occur at the site of a needle insertion. The bruising is not serious but can be seen in patients who bruise easily or who are hypersensitive.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Treatments are usually weekly, although this depends on the severity and chronicity of your condition, as well as your age, general health and other factors. A treatment plan will be discussed with you on your first visit and you will be fully informed every step of the way.
I am on prescription medication. Can I combine treatments?
It is usually not a problem combine TCM with pharmaceutical medications but it is advisable to check with your Centre of Health practitioner during your consult.
How Long Do Appointments Go For?
Please allow 60 to 90 minutes for the initial consultation and treatment and 45 to 60 minutes for return appointments.
What Should I Expect In My Initial Consultation For Chinese Medicine?
A typical consultation involves a detailed diagnosis, which includes questioning, observation of your physical state and tongue and pulse diagnosis. You will be asked about your current symptoms and any treatment you’ve received so far. It is also important to gather detailed information about your medical history and that of your family, your diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns and emotional state.
Treatment will be discussed with you during your consultation and depending on what you need, manipulation, acupuncture, cupping and herbal treatment may apply. You should expect to have a treatment plan and a full understanding of our approach in helping you manage your health problem.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing to receive acupuncture treatment. The acupuncturist may need to access points on your torso, arms and legs.
How Can I Pay For My Appointment?
You can pay by Cash, Debit or Credit Card.
Can I Claim Rebates With My Health Insurance?
HICAPS is available, allowing you to claim your Private Health Insurance Rebate on-site.
