ABOUT
August Wolff is a qualified Holistic Counsellor and Complementary Therapist. They hold a Diploma in Community Services and 15 years experience in the disability sector, supporting people with high support needs and intellectual disabilities through holistic care, including animal therapies, art and music therapies, massage and social support.
In addition August has spent about a decade studying various psycho-spiritual approaches, focussing on personal development, the effect of ritual and intention on overall wellbeing, and social and environmental connectedness. Complementing this is 8 years of learning and experience in kink and sex-positive spaces around the world. This has informed an approach that values safety and consent, reducing shame, overcoming trauma and educating others on the power of mindful space-holding.
August runs trauma informed workshops and educational sessions that focus on these principles and give people a grounded space to explore embodied expression and authentic relating.
August uses a Person-Centred approach and borrows from Gendlin Focussing, Ericksonian Hypnosis, art therapy, breathwork, Gestalt Therapy, polyvagal theory, Internal Family Systems and mindfulness. Their work is emotionally and somatically focussed while also looking at the big picture of a client's life - acknowledging that physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing are interconnected and each supports the other. August is a member of AusPATH (Australian Professional Association for Transgender Health).
On a more personal note...
August grew up nomadically, being raised in a variety of family structures and environments. This has given August a diverse cultural perspective on relationships and ways of finding belonging in the world.
Being queer, trans and non-monogamous allows August to value ways of being that tend to be misrepresented and stigmatised. Acutely aware of the shortage of LGBTQIA+ mental health support available, they are passionate about helping those whom the system so often fails.
Their own experience navigating trauma through holistic wellbeing approaches and psychotherapy has given August both empathy and a strong determination to support others in healing.
August also has personal experience with disability. They see their work as a way to challenge dominant narratives society holds towards marginalised people, in particular when it comes to the sexual expression and body positivity, of folks who are so often censored in media and standard sex education models.
August sees clients privately in person and via zoom or over the phone. They also run workshops in person around the country, internationally and online.
Services
One on One Counselling
It can be so important to have a dedicated space in our lives to focus on ourselves, free of expectation or pressure. This unique space is held with compassion, curiosity and confidentiality in order to unpack the stuff that runs behind the scenes. When we open pathways into our repressed or stuck feelings in a gentle way, we can loosen the grip of common symptoms such as anxiety, depression, numbness, dissociation and disconnection.
Whatever the symptoms, there is always an underlying cause. And counselling can provide the framework for clients to come to self realisations and breakthroughs, getting clear on their needs, boundaries and what can help them heal. Not because we need to be 'fixed' but because building a deep intimacy with ourselves allows us to be more present on the journey that is life - with all its ups and downs.
My sessions are client directed and trauma informed. Which means that I recognise that I don't have the answers, and instead I'm simply here to support you in finding those for yourself. I trust in a deep unfolding that can occur when we are given the tools and a safe container to be present to all our parts and the wisdom they hold. I am not here to shame you, pathologise or ask you to repeat your story in gory detail. Instead, I follow the threads of what wants to and is ready to emerge, and we can see where they take us together.
Sessions are available for adults in person, via zoom, google meets, or over the phone.
I run a home practice near Heidelberg, half an hour from Melbourne CBD and also offer 'walk & talk' therapy in local parks and trails, for folks looking for something fidget friendly or to get the benefits of body movement and nature while processing.
Rates
Single 60 min Sessions are $120
I also offer a limited number of low cost counselling sessions for people experiencing hardship. Please feel free to get in touch about availability.
I offer FREE 15 minute phone consultations to people to see if we are a good fit, to ask questions and get a feel for one another. It's important to me that my clients feel fully in charge of their own therapeutic journey and finding the right person to support that is a wonderful first step.
Private Health Insurance and the NDIS
I am able to bill clients on the NDIS who are self or plan managed. Some private health insurers also cover counselling services. Unfortunately counselling is not currently eligible for medicare rebates, however depending on out of pocket fees for psychologists, the cost may end up being the same.
