What Is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Technique is not a massage, treatment involves gentle touches in specific patterns to stimulate receptors in the soft tissue (fascia). Bowen's moves are soft but purposeful and may be applied through light clothing.
The moves are administered in sets and your practitioner then leaves the treatment room for a minimum of 2 minutes, allowing time for your body to integrate the moves. You may or may not feel a reaction. Reactions are different for each client and each treatment for that same client may also differ.
Commonly experienced sensations are tingling, heat and a feeling of pressure. If there is no reaction it doesn’t mean the treatment has not been effective. Once your body has stopped responding, the session is able to continue. Your practitioner may suggest exercise if appropriate to strengthen and assist in your rapid recovery.
After Your Bowen Treatment:
We recommend you follow the 3Ws (water, walk, wait). Water and walk assist in the elimination of any toxins that may have been released during the session. Walking and light exercise assists the body to realign itself. This especially important for clients with back conditions.
Your next session is best scheduled between five and 10 days later - a week is ideal. If you experience a new injury, it's recommended that you see us as soon as possible - before the body starts to compensate for the injury and creates an imbalance (posture), causing new pain and long term issues. Pregnant woman with back pain and asthma sufferers may book an appointment prior to the minimum five days wait.
Other types of manipulative (hands-on) therapy (massage, physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, for example) may alter the effectiveness of the Bowen treatment if performed up to four days before or five days after your Bowen appointment.
We recommended you don't apply ice or heat after a Bowen treatment.
You may experience responses that come and go with varying intensity for many days following your treatment. Don’t hesitate to contact your doctor if you have any concerns.
Unlike a Physiotherapy, Osteopathy or Chiropractic treatment, we do not impose corrections on the body.
