Due to covid restrictions, all face-to-face classes – Brush & Ink (Adults), Brush & Ink (Children), Yoga in Maribyrnong*, Merri Yoga – are suspended until at least the evening Thursday September 2nd.
Any yoga or brush and ink students requiring help or advice over this period is always welcome. Richard’s phone doesn’t have a ‘missed call’ capacity, so at least leave a number on his voicemail. Emails can be sent but it is a slower and more indirect form of communication.
Cancelled classes - *The Maribyrnong Community Centre organizes and takes enrolments for the yoga classes Richard teaches there. The centre has its own policy on cancelled classes which may differ from the classes Richard takes outside the centre.
If there is space, make-up classes will be offered, or for those who have paid for classes that have not gone ahead because of covid, your credit can be taken on into Term 4 classes or money returned to your account.

Richard has been teaching brush and ink since 1975. His classes & practice continue to develop and evolve.
- since 1973, has been deeply involved in oriental ink brush painting and Japanese calligraphy through study under masters, practice and exhibition.
- presently holds ‘Shihan Kaku’ teaching rank in Japanese calligraphy with Shodo Gaku Shu Schol, Nagoya, Japan.
- in 1980, began teaching Ink Brush Painting at Mangala Studios.
- is a trained secondary art teacher.

Short Courses in Japanese Ink Painting and Calligraphy
MAY/JUNE 2023
Traditional Japanese calligraphy and many techniques of sumi painting require the practitioner to follow a prescribed choreography of ink, brush, paper, posture and breath. This develops a deeper mindfulness, a refinement of perception and a focussing of one’s innate energies. This approach will be complimented with recognition of each student’s uniqueness and a chance for them to improvise with brush and ink.

TUESDAY DAY (For experienced students only): 12.00pm - 2.00pm 2nd, 16th & 30th May, 13th June
TUESDAY EVENING (General): 6.30pm - 8.30pm 9th & 23nd May, 6th & 20th June

Children's Ink Brush Painting Course
APRIL - JUNE 2023
Saturdays 29th April, 6th & 20th May, 3rd & 17th June
Please be aware of the irregular dates for Term 2.
The young painters in these classes learn many of the procedures of Japanese ink painting and calligraphy and improvise on natural and imaginative themes, the finished work expresses their joy of and focus on painting. Their paintings are shown in regular exhibitions.
9 - 15 year olds 12.30pm - 2pm

If space permits, students may commence after the course has begun.
